Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

There is a flaw in the program that adds jibberish characters to the routing points in your route. If you look at your route in RT, you will see these false characters.

To fix your problem, rename your routing points so that no jibberish characters are in their names. Then upload your route to your GPS. You should find it.

This is a known problem in RT that Garmin is probably not fixing, since BaseCamp is its successor. So, get used to using BaseCamp.

Garmin aren't stopping RoadTrip. If you think about it wouldn't make a lot of sense, Basecamp is positioned to the outdoor devices and RoadTrip is needed for the car navigation marketplace.
  • Drag and drop routing changes

I find it difficult to change routes using drag and drop in BaseCamp especially for interstate highways. It seems to be a much bigger problem if the interstate you are dragging to has another route. After 4 or 5 tries, BaseCamp picks the correct direction. Unlike RoadTrip you don't get to select from a popup list of POI's & roads if you are going north or south. I am sure you could make the BaseCamp choose the correct direction from the route information but I would much prefer to popup selection like RoadTrip. In addition it would be great if it work with the waypoint tool so you could choose your POI for waypoint creation.

It is way too much trouble to try and keep RoadTrips and BaseCamp data in sync so I use BaseCamp exclusively.
  • Can't send course directly to the FR 310xt.
    Can't save in tcx format.
  • Can't send course directly to the FR 310xt.
    Can't save in tcx format.

This is something that works much better from Training Center. Why are you looking for BaseCamp to do this?
  • Because I make/draw new course with mapping software and then send it to my device.

And when I run or cycle I use it for navigation in area that I have never been (which turn or path to take,…).
  • Though it is a little inconvenient, for now the only answer is to do your planning in BaseCamp, save the file in GPX, and import the GPX file into Training Center.
  • I do it that way. Even more. First I draw route in BaseCamp or MapSource.
Then I save it in gdb format (if I use auto routing function, which I normally do).
Then I use program Wingdb to convert route to tracks with all the points.
Then again I have to import this new file to BaseCamp or MapSource and save it in gpx format.
Then I use another program TCXconverter to convert gpx to tcx
(as I know TrainingCenter doesn't support import of gpx files).
    Then I import to TraingCenter.
And then finally I sent it to device.

    Simple, isn't it?

And when I have route with some waypoints, with all that conversion some points get lost...

So that is why I wrote, which are thins that miss in BaseCamp...

PS: I just discovered that there is new version of TrainingCenter 3.5.3.
I use 3.5.1., so I will upgrade and find out if there is any new functionality for me.

idunno snow, based on the lack of updates I also think RT is dead.

The only thing that I can think of that RT does better than BC right now is the street name detail. I like to see as many street names as possible, I know clutter isn't nice but I would like that to be my option. Garmin pls consider adding that if possible, it's bad enough that my Zumo shows little detail, I don't need my planning software to be the same.
