You can download the new version at http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=6591. The update inside the application should also be live soon.

We believe we have the issue of disappearing overlays on export fixed.

We improved seeking performance on playback, so everything should be a lot more responsive.

You can now download some additional gauges and templates.

This version also adds the capability to export a sequence of transparent PNG files of just the gauges of a video. That allows users to import them more easily into other video applications.

The official change-list:

  • Added capability to export a project as a set of transparent PNG files that only contain the gauges (for use in other video editing tools).
  • Added capability to download additional additional templates and gauges.
  • In edit mode, you can now right-click on a gauge and choose to delete it (as an alternative to using the Delete key).
  • The position marker on the map will now stay in view when playing back a clip or video.
  • Changed minimum screen resolution to 1280 x 720.
  • Gauge Builder UI Improvements.
  • Improved performance and responsiveness of the video player. Seeking should work much better.
  • Improved start-up time and memory usage.
  • Fixed issues with disappearing overlays.
  • Fixed some export issues when creating transitions.
  • Fixed issue with importing videos with overlapping file names.
  • Fixed wrong background color for library that was occurring on some pages.
  • Fixed crashes that would occur when deleting or moving a file while VIRB Edit was using it.
  • Made the map less obnoxious. It should now stay hidden if you choose to hide it.

    PNG Overlay Export

    Hi

The ability to export just the dials is great - but what should I be doing with 120 PNG's per minute of video that I export? What was the assumed workflow / use case with which software to make use of the PNG's?

    Thanks very much

I was also surprised by the number of PNG's, I was expecting a transparant video of som sort (probably doesn't exist).
I do know a way of using the PNG's in a video editing program.
In PDP I have more than one video channel.
Use one for the video, the other for the PNG's (adjust the duration for the PNG's so that their duration is just one frame per PNG).
  • UPDATE: I have just deleted 2.9, installed 2.8 and didn't lose my project. It exported 2.38Gb of video first time, no issues whatsoever.

Also having trouble exporting with 2.9. If I go back to 2.8 by uninstalling 2.9 and reinstalling 2.8 will I lose my project? Also crashes constantly.

This forum has always been very helpful, but I thought I was over the export problem several versions ago. Suffice to say this software is very frustrating to use.

We unfortunately had some regression with export reliability in 2.9.1, we are working very hard on a fix which should be out soon. I apologize for the trouble.

Our investigations showed there is no good transparent video format out there. We worked with the media team within Garmin to find out what they would prefer and transparent PNG is what we came up with. There are several video editing suites that allow you to import PNG sequences as a video source.

But this is definitely an advanced feature geared mostly for video professionals for whom VIRB Edit doesn't offer powerful enough features.

Just to say,I have this working really well now in Adobe Premiere Elements.

    Follow this instruction:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-elements/using/set-duration-imported-still-images.html

    followed by this instruction:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-elements/using/add-numbered-image-files-single.html

making sure to tick the "Numbered Stills" box, and you magically get 1 icon in your Project Assets representing the whole series of stills that you can drag onto Video2.

    Cheers

I am very sorry about the trouble. Your best bet would be to call product support.
