Elevation Graph / Grade

I used two clips to create a video. The clips were contiguous but split due to the 4 GB file size limit. I added an elevation graph to the video. When previewing the video in VIRB Edit, the graphs only showed the elevation profile for the clip that was displayed instead of the profile for the entire video. When the clips switched the elevation profile for the new clip appeared.
In the exported video, the graph only showed the elevation profile for the 1st clip. When the the clips switched in the exported video, the elevation text and a vertical line continued for a short time beyond the graph then disappeared.

Although the grade is relatively constant, at times the grade jumps around considerably. Is there a way to average the grade over a longer period of time to smooth out the gauge display.

I've tried using both the VIRB Elite FIT files and the FIT file from my Garmin 800 with the same results. The clips switch at the 20-21 second mark. The grade % jumping around is at the 50-55 sec mark.

Below is a link to a short test video to illustrate both of these problems.

I got it. I have trouble syncing it up, as I am not familiar with the area. :) At what timestamp of the FIT file does the video start?

The way I did it was to sync the video at the first big intersection in the Video @ Avinida Empressa. This is 6:30 into the video as I go under the road sign just over the intersection.

To help you align, you will see a School speed limit sign like the attached picture and the shadow of the traffic light across the road. The FIT file should show this as about 55:18.

The youtube clip I posted before with the elevation fluctuations and gauges added, is about 7:30 into the video. Haven't looked at the whole thing, but I assume the elevation fluctuations are everywhere.

@FALAGAR, did you find anything interesting?

I had one of our engineers take a look, and I am afraid this is an issue in the actual data.

We'll work with the device team to see what kind of improvements we can make.

Thanks for making this available, this is certainly helpful in illuminating the issue.

Are you blaming the Edge team? If so then that's me screwed for a fix anytime soon then! ;)

On a serious note, if it is originating from the Edge I'm assuming that the sudden jumps could be variations in the barometric data due to wind gusts etc? If so then its odd because the gradient data is obviously smoothed when its displayed, as I never see any fluctuation like this when riding, whereas perhaps its written to the fit file in a more raw state?!
  • I don't know which Edge you have, but if you look closely at data from an Edge 800, or just stare at an altitude display while climbing, it's pretty clear it works and records in 2 meter increments. You'll see the altitude go up by 6-7 ft at a time, and then "stick" for a little while until it decides to add another 2 m.

Yeah well both Altitude and Grade are fairly smoothly displayed on my Edge (1000), however whatever it writes to the FIT file might not be. Not sure if there is any Grade data in the file, or if VIRB edit calculates it from elevation and distance, but whatever it writes to the FIT file is screwed when you use this in a VIRB video.

FIT does support grade, but it doesn't look like it gets written out by the VIRB at least, and VIRB Edit doesn't currently look for grade, we always calculate it for elevation and distance.

Would you mind attaching a FIT track from your Edge? I'd like to check if maybe they do write grade. The file you uploaded before that I have was from a VIRB, right?

@ FALAGAR, The FIT file I posed before was only from my Edge 1000 (and this was what generated the fluctuations in my video).

My VIRB is a basic one so I assume it doesn't generate one, or any data.

Do you still have the file? If there is grade data contained in it, then I guess where you might be going wrong is by trying to calculate it for folk that aren't merging and perhaps have GPS based altitude already in their VIRB premium?

Yep, I checked that file and there is no grade information in it, unfortunately.
