Vector Data

It's not a vector file. The question is if we support non-Vector power data. That all depends if the data is in the FIT file and if the format is the same as the Vector's. I am afraid it's not but we'll have to do some testing/investigating.

The basic power data in the FIT file is the same from all power meters. Additional information is added by some power meters such as power balance, Torque Effectiveness and Pedal Smoothness.

No need to be afraid ;) The file comes from a Garmin 800 FIT that read the ANT+ feed from a Powertap wheel. Way (a long way) before Vector got released. I guess my question was more about:

a) Is the VIRB head unit going to read power data from generic ANT+ power devices and save for inclusion on the video
b) Does Vector do something special that VIRB Edit uses (I guess outside of the standard)

It would be madness to write a FIT file differently (i.e. outside a freely readable standard) for data as simple as power, depending upon the ANT+ device that provided it, notwithstanding the extra data that comes from the Vector about L/R power balance.

Where I want to get to ideally is a configurable visual dashboard with data all coming directly from the VIRB (not any coincidentally present GPS) , which gets speed (not GPS speed, which is quite frankly laughable in accuracy), cadence, heart and power data from (potentially multiple) connected ANT+ devices.

Okay I have Virb Edit 2.2 and I do see the vector power from any of the new layouts. I would love to attach the .fit file but it looks like the forum has a 64k file size limit on my account.

going through the menu on the Virb I do not see a option to detect Vector. Like I do for HR and cadence. Is there a update I need for the Virb for it to detect the Vector?
Also is there a way to change the scale of the wattage meter that is displayed because your typical professional sprinter only puts out 1,600w so 2,500s on the meter display is a little over kill. I am weak enough without being reminded by not being able to move the power meter 1/2 way up :)

I am not sure about VIRB detecting the Vector, maybe someone else can chime in on that question.

I'll create a case for the scale of the wattage meter. And I am pretty sure you would handily beat my power numbers.

The Virb's don't directly connect to power meters (Vector or otherwise). Instead, they rely on you to pull in data from your Garmin Edge (or like) unit within the Virb Edit suite. Within that, you get standard total power.

It doesn't much matter if it's Vector, PowerTap, Quarq, or some other ANT+ PM.

Now, I actually have two issues here with this.

1) I'd suspect there's huge overlap between cyclists who want to buy Virb Elite and cyclists who have power meters. By simply adding in capture of the ANT+ power meter stream, it'd really make for an incredibly compelling product. Doing the mix and match Virb Edit dance is fine with a single clip - but sucks with multiple clips from different portions of a ride.

2) I'd really like to see the same power metrics available to add within the Virb Edit suite as I have on a Edge 500/800/810/etc... Basically, all of them. I'd love to have a simple drag and drop-style picker and just pick any metrics I want. Be it power, NP, 30s power, left/right balance, etc...

It's these sorts of scenarios that attract all the folks who post Crit-style videos on YouTube with gauges today, which, btw, is a lot of cyclists with GoPro's.

Spot on ... the Garmin VIRB Elite needs to consume all the ANT+ device data available (HRM, Speed, Cadence, Power etc) and store on the VIRB Elite, this would then all be automatically synced up with the video (when they fix the intermittent sync issue). For VIRB edit all the data would be available straight from camera import and fit files would not be needed from your Edge device then.

For watersports I would just use the Camera with it's GPS and maybe HRM.

For cycling I would use both my Edge and the Camera, I would use the Edge to record my whole ride as usual, and the Camera to record some of the interesting sections, maybe a scenic downhill section - and as described above, I would expect the Camera to have all the data stored it needed without having to refer back to Edge.
