Virb Edit 2.5.0 is released via OSX App Store!

  • Added support for rotating video and g-force readings 180 degrees.
  • Added support for text titles.
  • Added per-day clip organization. Yeah!
  • Added support for bulk deletion of unused clips ("Delete Unused" in the context menu for Clip Library Folders).
  • Upgraded to 64-bit application
  • Improved upload performance of exported movies, via both the built in YouTube upload option and standard export.
  • Improved feedback for export failures.
  • Fixed various export errors.
  • Fixed various other bugs.

and the Clip Library part of the window is finally resizable!
  • Looks to me like VE 2.5.1 deleted every single video I had. There's nothing in the Trash, and the folder on a second partition of my Mac's hard drive no longer has the folder where the videos had been.

This is not good, to say the least.
  • Hmm, I guess you have set a custom location for Movies in Virb Edit and that is on your second partition?
Are both the Videos you assembled gone in VE as well as you whole

I hope you have a Time Machine backup?
One good thing with using Virb Edit from the App Store is that it is sandboxed so it should run more protected.
Let the delevopers know, maybe there is a log that has this information as to why it happened.
  • Yes, it was a custom location. I have Time Machine running but it wasn't backing up the secondary partition, unfortunately. That partition had been a Windows installation which I deleted, then when my main partition became full I moved the VE library to there.

I used 'Delete Unused Video' the other day and all I can think is that that removed everything.

No, not a good thing. I had to install 2.5.2 from the App Store because 2.5.1 started crashing all the time, I assume because there was an update available and the update code was broken. But I hate being asked for permission to do things that I just told it to do, like access the files on my Edge. Sandboxing is a pain. (And yes, I know that's Apple's fault.)

Incidentally, if the developers are reading this, currently garmin.com/macosx leads you to 2.4.0 for some reason. That needs to be fixed.

Anyone that ran 2.5.1: I recommended the autoupdate-to-2.5.2 route because that version fixed a fairly major, release halting issue in previous 2.5 releases, and you're all encountering that bug because you went and downloaded a file from a backwards-engineered, unofficially released URL.

I still recommend just running autoupdate to get 2.5.2 new version for now.

I edited the one post I saw mentioning the bad version/URL, updating it to point at 2.5.2 once it is released. Is there another mention of that URL I'm missing somewhere?

    GEOMONSTER:
To my knowledge, we never know enough about your movie files to actually remove their containing folder, and I haven't heard anything about data loss issues stemming from the delete unused feature. Definitely keep me posted if you find a way to reproduce anything similar to what you've experienced, though!
  • I hope I never see that kind of thing again! I'm not too concerned about the lost video since it's all stuff that I've either rejected or have created videos which are uploaded to Vimeo or Youtube already.

To a certain extent, I just see it as a quick cleanup resulting in 200 Gb of space for new videos. :)

But if those had been my holiday videos, I'd be feeling a whole lot different right now.

I have removed the link from post #2 of this thread.

Apologies for publishing the "unofficial" link to the file on your public download site. However I think there was a lot of interest in VIRB Edit for Mac 2.5 for evaluation of the new 25fps support in the VIRB v3.7 firmware.

NB the problematic VIRB Edit for Mac 2.5.1 link is still valid - you may want to remove the file or replace it with a redirect...
  • I really like the Titles option in VE 2.5.2 but it's flawed. When you add titles and set them to Align "Centred", they end up that only the first word is centered, so you miss part of any longer titles as seen here.

It is possible to go back into VE and drag the title over to the left but it shouldn't be necessary, of course.

I expected the align feature to align text in a multyline text field.
But how to get a multyline text in one field I don't know.
  • All you can do is one-liners for now, I think.
