Context Menus Fail to Open (Version 2.3.0 (2.3.0))

I think I mentioned once before that I was having a hard time removing videos from the Virb Edit Clips area, but now it's completely impossible for me to remove any because I never get the gear on the videos any more even when I hold down "Control". I was using a Bluetooth Keyboard and that was working for the longest time, then I stopped getting the gear, so I went back to the wired Mac keyboard and I still can't ever get that gear.

I probably have 100 video clips in the library. Perhaps this has something to do with it?

"Control" is still working for the sake of copying - I was able to go to Virb/About and copy the version number from the About window.
  • I'd back up the database if I could find where I left it. ;) I do use Time Machine as backup.

I made no OS changes or updates recently that I can remember. But I did notice that back at the start of February, it was getting more difficult/random to see the gear on the clips. I had hoped to free up some space on the computer, in time for the start of the riding season, but if I never get the gear, I can't delete anything.
  • Now that I think about it, I used to use a Bt mouse, up until a month ago, then it just stopped working. I put the original wired mouse back on after that.

Hmm, maybe I should turn off Bt and see if that has any effect. I have a Bt keyboard connected, but I can live without it for a while, as I test.
  • Nope, no change even with Bt off. I still don't see the gear on clips. And the gear on edited video projects won't let me do anything I normally could with a right click/Control click. It invariably opens the video.

GEOMONSTER: How many videos and clips do you have? I remember you mentioning that right clicks and hovering didn't work for your clips at some point, as well, and the main thing I can think of that would have changed as you used VIRB Edit more is how many clips/videos you have.

Rough numbers would be fine. You could get exact numbers, if you want, by going an looking in /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Garmin/VIRB Edit/Database/0/ and then counting the number of folders inside of Projects (Videos) and RawMovies (Clips)
  • The thing is I don't see anything in the Application Support folder which is specific to the Virb. Yes, there's a Garmin folder, but it's not Virb related.

But there are hundreds of clips in the clip area of Virb Edit. In fact there are 11 thumbnails in each line of my clip area, and 32 lines. So 352 clips.

you are looking in the wrong library folder. the correct library folder is in your home directory but it is hidden by default.
here is how to make it visible again:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2057221/how-to-view-the-library-folder-in-mavericks.html
  • Wrong place again. In your own Library folder, not the system wide one. Finder, Go menu, Go To Folder..., and type ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/VIRB Edit (you don't need to escape the spaces in this box). It has to be there if you've used VIRB Edit on that machine as that user.
  • Thanks! The MacWorld article was very clear on how to make the folder visible. I see it, and the Virb information now.
  • Ok, I archived everything in the projects and raw folders, and started VE again, and it was as if it had just been installed. It offered up the intro video.

So I went out and got a couple of short videos on the camera, came back in and imported them, and still there are no gears on the videos, so I can't delete any, as before.
  • Well that's really interesting. I found an old version of VE (2.21) on the CNet site and downloaded and installed that and it made no difference. Then I noticed that if I was moving the mouse when I right clicked (Control-clicked) I got a context menu! So I am able to delete and rename clips now. I went back to 2.30 and it still works there too. If the cursor is not moving when I right click it just opens the file in viewing mode, but if I'm moving the mouse and I right click, I get the menu. I never see the gear on the clips, but as long as I can delete videos, I'm happy.

Weird. Thanks everyone for the help!
