First ride with my new VIRB Elite

My VIRB Elite arrived yesterday from Amazon, so I mounted it on my MTB and took it with me today to record the ride. I encountered a few problems along the way. At about 15 minutes in, I dropped off the pavement onto a gravel road, a drop of about 3 inches on my full suspension Cannondale Rush. The VIRB didn't seem to like the impact, and restarted. (As I found out later, it lost the first 15 minutes of video.) I started the first climb, then eventually reached the top and started descending. The road vibration from the gravel road naturally picked up as my speed increased. A little ways into the descent I noticed that the viewfinder was frozen and the record light wasn't blinking. I stopped and held down the power button until the VIRB restarted. (Later I found that the VIRB had lost the GPS data for this segment, although the video was still there.) From here until the end of the ride, the VIRB behaved itself. I stopped a couple of times at overlooks to remove the VIRB from the mount (easy with gloves on) and shoot some stills while the video was still running (pretty cool). The stills came out fine, although with the overcast skies and the leaves all down, there wasn't much point to actually taking them.

So when I got home, I started VIRB Edit on my Mac Pro and connected the VIRB. That's when I found out about the missing first 15 minutes of video, and the missing GPS data for the next 24 minutes (the VIRB stores videos into 24 minute, 4 Gb chunks, so for my 1:42 ride with 15 minutes lost, I had 4 clips). After VIRB Edit retrieved the clips from the VIRB, it offered to let me add GPS data to the first clip. I used the .fit from my Edge 800 to do that, but that exposed another problem. The synchronization done in VIRB Edit is about 15 minutes off, so it was showing the heart rate, altitude, and speed (and the position on the map) for about 15 minutes before the actual video. (The VIRB itself doesn't seem to know about daylight time; at the moment it's showing 2:14 when the actual time is 1:14 EST). Of course, that's only a problem for that one 24 minute clip where the VIRB froze and lost the GPS data for that segment. The remaining clips use the VIRB's own GPS data, and so is accurate. On the other hand, the VIRB doesn't seem to have actually connected to my HRM (Garmin hard HRM belt) and maybe not my Tempe, even though I asked it to. The HRM was working (the Edge 800 saw it the whole time). Don't know about the Tempe, since the 800 can't show it and I left my Fenix at home. The video is displaying G, speed, and altitude, but not HR or temperature.

So. Minuses: the VIRB glitched twice and lost data, both video and GPS. Not good. VIRB Edit didn't synchronize the video and GPS data from my Edge 800 properly. Pluses: the mount was easy to use with gloved hands. Video quality is good, although stabilization doesn't seem to work very well on high speed (25 - 30 mph) descents on gravel roads. The ability to take stills while recording video is a big plus, although the stills are small (in 16x9 12 M pixel mode) compared to my Pentax Optio, which I usually carry.
  • Another day, another software version. Installed 2.80 on my Elite. This time I managed to connect with my HRM by "Forget All Sensors", turning on heart rate, and walking down the driveway away from my GSC-10. It locked up then. No success connecting to the GSC-10, even when I moved myself and the HRM away from the VIRB and the GSC-10. (After the ride, I left the VIRB on and turned on "Temperature" when I was near enough to the Tempe, and it locked up with the Tempe.) So again no problems with the video or the GPS track. It looks like Garmin has fixed yesterday's problem with the summaries on Garmin Connect, too. Getting closer...

    Still not working

I just downloaded 2.80 also and it is worse than before, I cannot shut it off and the view finder is frozen. I have done a factory reset and I will see how that works out. I have two brand new elites unopened and the will stay that way until this garbage is fixed.
  • Some of the same problems...

I had issues with synchronization (but not lost data) when I recorded video at 60fps.
I believe version 2.80 of the VIRB software might have fixed that, but really need to verify.

I CAN get my HRM to pair, no problem.
I CAN NOT get my Speed & Cadence Sensor to pair no matter what I do.

But, now that I have version 2.80, I have two new problems:

    1. Sometimes, VIRB won't completely shut off when I slide the record switch backwards (to OFF). It shows a power symbol on the screen, the green light stays on and gets stuck there. Holding the power off button won't shut it off. I actually need to pull the battery.

    2. I get green video at the start of some clips.

Very frustrating, but when they finally work out the bugs, this is going to be an awesome camera. I'm happy with the video quality and operation.
  • Me TOO!

    Same here.

I'm also getting a green video at the start of some clips now which I never had before.
  • Since upgrade to 2.80 and restore to factory settings I have had no more issues (3 cycles in 3 days and so far so good).

I am using the default 1080p settings now.

Speed/Cadence still does not pair ... maybe next version?

Have you tried another microSD card? Switching from SanDisk to Sony helped me, and my two successful runs have been using the Sony 32Gb class 10 microSD card. No restarts and one freeze since switching to the Sony.

    micro card

I have one in the mail, I am in So. Korea and Amazon is pretty much where I do all my shopping. I reset everything again and I got one 24 min. segment in a three hour run. Are you getting more than one clip? When it is in loop mode does it erase every 24 minutes or just start a new one and save all previous?

Yes, I've gotten up to 5 good clips on a 2 hour MTB ride, with one zero length one in between for that ride due to a freeze using the Sony chip. The ~ 24 minute clip size is due to the limitation of the FAT-32 filesystem that they use that can only support file sizes up to ~ 4 Gb, which seems to be 24 minutes at 1080p @ 30 fps. I don't know what it does in loop mode, since I haven't tried it. I'd guess it fills the chip before deleting the oldest clip to make room for the latest, but that's just a guess.

    Elite

I think mine is finally working properly. I had 6 24minute clips in one video with no problems and that's is with the SanDisk. I turned off loop and let it just run. I download using windows media and just pick out what I want 1st rather than waiting for it to download on Virb Edit.

Can any Virb owner give feedback on the reliability on the flaps and covers preventing water intrusion. I came accross this amazon review that puts the water resistance into question
    http://www.amazon.com/review/RIU9YOXNUY81Z/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00EOHUVTU&channel=detail-glance&nodeID=172526&store=gps
I am curious if the unit could handle let's say shooting video on a pool, maybe a quick dip underwater shooting a subject, or if that kind of use scenario should require the dive case.
