VIRB Edit Javascript Error

I get the following error in the right side of panel when attempting to manually do a g-Metrix sync, and again if I try to use the Map tab.

"This page didn't load Google Maps correctly. See the JavaScript console for technical details."

Additionally, my actual video is ~5 minutes long, but the right panel is showing 40 minutes. This is the first run on a freshly formatted memory card. This is with the latest version of the software as of this post, v5.4.2.

Any insight would be great. I got this camera (Virb Ultra 30) specifically for the G-Metrix and every video I make has them badly and unusably out of sync.
  • I am having this issue on Windows 10. Virb Edit 5.4.2 (5/22/2018). I have the latest Java platform on my system. When I open the G-Metrix sync page, i see the map for one second then it disappears into

“Oops! Something went wrong. This page didn’t load Google Maps correctly. See the JavaScript console for technical details.”

Lets get this fixed asap please Garmin.

It's been about 4 days since this was posted up. Does anyone know if Garmin has acknowledged the issue?
  • This is the last bit of information I got from Garmin Support this morning:

Patricia : I certainly apologize. I have been advised that Garmin is aware of the problem and a case has been opened and sent to software engineers.

I was hoping for an ETA but now my 40 minute video project is at a complete stand still because of this.
  • I can't go another week without this stuff working, and even when it works, GMetrix is painfully unreliable to sync and doesn't STAY in sync, anyway. Does anyone have any experience with other action cameras w/ altitude, GPS, heart rate, and accelerometer? I'd be interested in recommendations.
  • Any suggestions on an alternative software (not dashware) ?
I can't just sit here and wait...

Not really, Dashware is just a pain, Racerender.. just not up to it.
I'm waiting until Garmin release a fix.
  • I went ahead and used Dashware yesterday. Spent a few hours playing with it to get the guages dialed in and data synchronized, but I believe my race video overlays turned out great. Pretty ridiculous that Garmin is taking so long to resolve this issue. It had been a while since I had used Dashware and all I remember was the boring scroll bar overlay of data. They have guages and bars now. I'm thinking that it's time to move away from "Garmin" products and "support".

I was just looking at their website. It says you can use any data source. My flight variometer records a flight log, automatically, on every flight. The only thing I'd be missing is Heart Rate data, and I'd rather ditch the Heart Rate and get the rest of the telemetry. I guess I'll give it a try, this weekend. The timing on this worked out quite well for me. I was about to pick up a Virb Ultra 30 and switch to using my Virb Elite as a second-angle camera, but if Garmin isn't supporting their software, there's no reason to stick with them. Since I'm stuck running the Dashware experiment this weekend, anyway, I'll hold off on ordering the new camera until midway through next week.

Thanks for the tip on Dashware. I'll let you all know how it went.
  • This doesn’t sound prommissing at all...

Unfortunately, things like Bing, Google Maps and Google Earth are not free to use for large corporations: we pay for google maps page loads. So that has to be balanced with user experience when we decide what technologies are available. We used to support switching to Bing maps, but stopped for business reasons. We've identified the issue with our current use of Google Maps and it is also business related rather than technical. The good news is, the business folks should be able to get this fixed without us needing to release a new version of VirbEdit. One day we'll all wake up and it will just start working again.

  • I just spoke with support, again. They've filed a ticket for the work, but it doesn't appear as though they are going to rush the fix. Because Virb Edit is free software, they don't consider it to be a critical issue. They had two years to deal with this, and didn't. But they expect us to just patiently hang tight so we don't interrupt their schedule.

I was a little gruff with the guy, but this isn't my first conversation with them, where they've refused to give me any reason to believe that we're being heard. Though I particularly enjoyed the response to my statement, that I wouldn't be purchasing another Garmin: "Thanks for choosing Garmin!" I know it's an auto-respond, but the irony of it was annoying.

Customer:I'm being forced to switch to DashWare this weekend. I've held off my Elite->Ultra upgrade, for financial reasons, for a couple months - and I'm glad for it. If Garmin won't be fixing Edit, the Ultra is effectively useless and I'll pick up the GoPro.

Garmin:I see case was created a few days ago and that the issue has been escalated to be resolved in the future.

Customer:Essentially, I need to know when the Edit fix will be out. I'm a professional software developer, myself, and 1) the level of amateurism, modeled by allowing the API key to expire - despite two years' warning that it would happen, is astonishing to me. 2) Such offlines are treated, by reputable developers, as emergencies - they are fixed as quickly as possible and customers are given a constant stream of updates so they know when to expect the service to be online and can see that their continued loyalty is important to the company.

Customer:"Escalated to be resolved in the future" tells me that you're not currently working on it. Have you not noticed that there are >1100 views on the forum thread about this?

Garmin:I apologize. Garmin provided Virb Edit as a free program since purchasing Professional video software can be rather expensive. We do our best to support it when issue arise.

Garmin:Was there anything else I could do for you today?

Customer:Virb Edit is Free... with the purchase of the camera.

Garmin:No purchase is necessary to unlock or use the program.

Garmin:I have talked people with GoPros through using it.

Customer:....and it is rather critical software, if you own one of Garmin's cameras. If the software is offline, most of your users are offline. Yes, you sell hardware, but the fact that there is a critical API dependency in the use of that hardware means that a software outage is - effectively - an outage of hardware that people dropped hundreds of dollars on.

Garmin:I dont know of any other video editing software that will add in the .FIT files to the videos so I am unable to recommend any others. Unfortunately all we can do is wait for the updated version of the program.

Customer:So your position is that, since there's no other option for your users to go to, they're going to have to sit tight and deal with your schedule while you de-prioritize them?

Garmin:I understand your desire for this issue to be fixed. There is nothing else I can do my end since you have already been added to the case and the case is no in the hands of the developers. Is there anything else I could help you with today?

Garmin:the case is in the hands*

Customer:An ETA would have been helpful. I'm glad this happened before I upgraded to the Ultra. That purchase will not be hapening.

Garmin:Thanks for choosing Garmin. Have a great day!
  • The cost of the API is laughably inexpensive: https://cloud.google.com/maps-platform/pricing/sheet/ To put it in perspective, I use the sync API a few times per week. In the 5 years that I'll own the camera, that'll come to around 1000 uses of the API. (I'm estimating on the extremely high side, here.) Even if each use of the sync feature requires multiple API calls - and it probably does - the total cost of my use of the API will come to a fraction of a cent. Weighed against the revenue of the hardware sale, the API cost is insignificant.

What's holding up the change is that they were caught off-guard by the deprecation.

well, turns out it is a financial issue. Can't really imagine the cost being relevant, but maybe things are tight...
They could just charge $1 for the app - that would cover the cost easily.
I guess I could imagine a SW hack that just reloads the map in a loop and then creates uncontrollable cost for Garmin, but they could prevent that easily...
Don't think they will sell a lot of cameras without this SW working, but somehow they seem to have the weird mindset that the SW is "free" and therefore doesn't deserve support.
