Homeport wont load after setting custom measurement units

Here's a copy of my post made on another forum............. I am posting this here because of my frustration in not being able to start the Homeport programme and to alert Garmin on this issue.
If someone has a simpler solution to the one I have already received please let's have it as it may help others with same issue:

I'm having a problem as I cannot get Homeport to start/load.

Initially I downloaded the online software to my Notebook, HP started normally and seemed to work fine as I toyed around with it for a while which included loading the Vision chip from the 4010 and importing some Mapsource data.

Here's where it comes off the rails.....I also have a desktop PC so I wanted to use Homeport on both units however, when I loaded the software on my desktop (2nd) PC, Homeport would now not start on the Notebook but was working on the (2nd) PC.

Now I cannot get Homeport to start on either machine although there is the 34mb Homeport program appearing on both machines, so I removed the software, downloaded and re-installed Homeport again but it still won't start, the software is on my hard drive and the HP icon appears on the quick start but it just won't start.

I've contacted Garmin support, they suggested that I contact my local (Australian) support centre however they tell me they haven't even heard of Mapsource and will need to contact Garmin in the US for advice!

Any suggestions on how I can get HP to get going?

Thanks, Tony

Received this reply:

Tony,
I had the SAME problem on my laptop, several times. Not sure of the cause, other than something in it's database gets corrupt, and once that occurs you ned to remove HP completly, then re-install. FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK. BACKUP YOUR DATA FIRST!!!

To remove completely:
1. Control Panel, Add Remove programs, find Garmin Homeport, click Remove.
2. Now DELETE the Garmin/Homeport directories under Documents and settings\your_username\AplicationData\Garmin\Homep ort AND under Programs\Garmin\Homeport. If you see it anywhere else, DELETE IT.
3. Now the delicate part: run "Regedit", and delete any Homeport Keys in the registry: there should be 2, one under Local Machine\Software\Garmin\Homeport and the 2nd under CurrentUser\Software\Garmin\Homeport. Delete both of those keys.
4. Reboot
5. Re-install the Homeport install program. No need to re-download, just click on the file you downloaded already.
6. If you had data backed up already, do the restore and yoru back in bidness.

The same issue has occured to me a few times already. Runs fine, then I close it. Go to restart HP, and nothing happens. Click icon and notta. Check task mngr and notta. Do the above dance and it runs again. Obviously Garmin has a small bug somewhere...

good luck!

My Reply:

thanks for the advice, HP now loads perfectly. BTW I'm still waiting on Garmin support to ge back to me with their solution, only been over one week!!

Plus latest:

I was a little premature in my last post to say that it now loads perfectly, well it did....for all of two days and probably four start ups, now I've got the same problem and I'm getting a little sick of it now.

Surely there must be other people besides Bxxxxxxxxx and I with this issue?

Is it a Garmin HP S/W issue or a Windows issue or a machine issue??? I'm becoming quite frustrated and annoyed that I've got to go through that rigmarole again to get HP to load, again.

It becomes doubly frustrating when my local Garmin support tell me they haven't heard of Homeport, tell me they will contact Garmin in the US for a solution AND never call you back even after I make follow up calls to check on progress
I hope someone from Garmin is following this thread.

What say you all?

Tony

Any feedback will be appreciated.

  • Homeport won't load?

If you want to work seriously: stay with your old, reliable and effective MapSource ! (up to ver. 6.13.7, of course)

    :-)

I'm sorry to state that in the "NU" era, quality and reliability are not a priority...

    Bye.

    Tony,

If you could you provide more information to help troubleshoot this issue, that will be greatly appreciated:
When you start HomePort, what exactly do you observer?
    * HomePort starts, then displays an error which asks for more information and then quits? or
    * HomePort shows a splash screen and/or displays its name in the taskbar area, then go away without showing you anything?

Also, could you try starting HomePort with and without your SD card inserted?

    Neolite,
When I select the HomePort icon to start, something (pretty sure it's Homeport name/logo) momentarily flashes on the bottom task bar and then nothing, .
With or without SD card inserted makes no difference.
    Thanks, Tony

    Neolite,
I'm pretty sure my problems with HP not starting commenced after I went and customised units of measure in HP.

  • Hi,
I'm the lucky guy that replied to Tony in the other forum on how to un-install and re-install homport. I also had the same problem reported above. And now that he mentions it, I also custumized the Units of Measure menu, that may have been the last thing I did before I shut down and restarted Homeport. And then it would not start. No splash screen, not locked taks, nothing. Double click on icon, nothing. My HD would flash for about 1/2 second and then nothing.

I had this issue the first time I installed, and subsequently a 2nd time after re-installing. Since, I've gotten it up and running and it hasn't occured again.

Of note, I had a dual monitor setup. I re-installed on laptop un-docked, so no 2nd monitor. Not sure if that is what did it but..fyi.

I have not had the issues of not starting at all but it does become very slow occasionally. Like pan to move the map over and wait 7 seconds for a move.

I also have dual 26" screens, my computer has 4G of Ram, my video card also has 1G of ram. So, I don't think that is the reason why it does not start for you.

I have spread the map over both screens as well as tried with half a screen, does nothing to speed it up.

Sometimes rebooting the computer will make it run a bit faster, other times not, last night I left it open on my task bar and this morning it is a bit quicker.

    ???????
  • jhawk,
In my case, no. It was not in the taskbar, and no task existed in the Task manager either.

I saw the note in the Known Bugs thread, the Custom units of measure caused this. That makes sense, cause both times this occured to me I had changed the unit of measures. Whats the 1st thing you do with new software? Go to Tools or Edit, then Options and setup your defaults like units. Since re-installed and running ok, I have not changed them.

Please see the Known Issues thread that Machria mentions.

Tony, the behavior you are observing is due to the Custom Measurement Units issue mentioned in that thread. This will be fixed in an upcoming release of HomePort.
