the best thing is to start a manual activity: hit the button, select the activity icon, then select walk. double tap to start and stop your activity.

As for updating the device software, have you tried syncing the vivosmart 4 with Garmin Express on a computer?

The Move IQ feature is based on arm movement, it may be mistaking your arm motion for movement on a elliptical instead of walking.
