Sleep Tracking Measurement Increases throughout the day

When I check my Garmin Connect program in the morning, it gives me a preliminary read of how much sleep I  got the night before.  However, as I said, it's preliminary.   The amount of recorded sleep actually increases throughout the day.  This morning, Garmin Connect reported that I got just over 5 hours of sleep.  By the evening,  this number had increased to 6 hours and twenty five minutes.  How common of an issue is this?

  • Same issue.  I had a Vivoactive HR watch and it reported sleep accurately from first view.

Why is this an issue with the VA3?

  • Frankly sleep report is why I bought the Garmin. Another reason...no need to pay a monthly fee

I'm disappointed.  Believe I made  mistake.

  • Hi DaveL.  I find that the Garmin provides much more information than my previous wathes (I had several Fitbits).

I had problems with my first VA3 - it wouldn't measure VO2 Max properly.   I regularly run (fast jog really) 10-13 km per day, yet I was getting VO2 Max measurements in the "Poor" range.  Then suddenly (I assume after an update) my VO2 Max measurement changed from Poor to Excellent.

I've also found that the glass bezel is easy to crack.  The bezel seems to sit just a little bit proud of the watch case, and is easy to whack against things. Unfortunately, I found out that the bezel cannot be replaced, so I had to buy a new watch after I cracked the bezel on my original VA3. I'm now using an aftermarket protective glass cover on the watch face to help protect the bezel. I’ve had to replace the cover a couple of times now, as I've managed to crack it twice now (but it saved the bezel from cracking). I also use a soft plastic surround that encloses and protects the watch case. Both items are available inexpensively on Amazon.

I purchased a Garmin Dual chest strap monitor, which I find more accurately measured my heart rate than the built-in wrist monitor.  I had a lot of difficulty getting the watch to recognize the chest strap. Eventually it connected and worked well for about a year. But when it started to wear the battery down after a couple of hours use, I contacted Garmin through this forum to try to find a fix. Garmin advised that, like the cracked bezel, the chest strap needed to be replaced,  and could not be repaired. I opted to purchase an inexpensive imported strap for about 1/3 the cost of the Garmin-branded product.  The watch recognized it immediately and its been working flawlessly. I recommend that people invest in an inexpensive strap rather than buying a Garmin branded strap. FYI, the inexpensive chest strap unit snaps into the fabric Garmin strap (I liked the Garmin strap better than the one that came with the new monitor).

I guess that I'm satisfied enough with the VA3, although I take the measurements with a grain of salt.  I look at the trends rather than the actual numbers.  The sleep measurement is hit or miss.  It often doesn't correctly recognize the time that I fell asleep (it can be off by 3 or 4 hours). Each morning I have to manually enter the approximate time that I fell asleep. Once I enter the appropriate time that I fell asleep, the Connect program fills in the type of sleep (light, REM, deep) that I experienced during the time that the watch didn't even recognize that I had been asleep.....wierd.

My daughter recently purchased an Umigigi sports watch because she just could not justify spending $200+ when an inexpensive import that measures pretty much everything that my VA3 measures can be had for $45 (also on Amazon).  It works beautifully and looks good too.  If it only lasts a year, it's still $45 and not a couple of hundred dollars.

Good luck with your watch.  Plan to develop some patience if you happen to lack it now.

  • Thanks.  appreciate your comment.

I used my Garmin Vivoactive HR for years and years. It used to let me down when I was travelling...if I didn't have the charger with me and a computer I was euchred.  The battery lasted twice as long as this one.

I've had a Fitbit watch. It burnt the top of my wrist under the watch. Had a recall. I haven't bought a Fitbit since.

I bought it 2 weeks ago.

If I keep it I'll get a screen protector for sure.

I'm really grateful that you told me that edited start time will restore the data. That's a plus as is the screen protector hint.  And the patience hint... :-)

    Dave
