Ellipitical app shows 6000 steps for 20km run and it should be 17,000 - 26,000

I'm delighted with my new vivoactive 3 music .  However, I bought it mainly for use on the elliptical machine.   I did a longish run  on my elliptical machine for 60 minutes doing 20km ( as shown on the machines reader).    However 20km should be 26,246 steps.  My vivoactive only showed 6 or 7000 steps.

Now I know the ellipitical app from previous posts cant measure distance, but going by the Harvard stats and Livestrong an ellipitical is the equivalent of 60-70% of running  meaning I should  15,000 to 17,000 steps .. Instead the vivoactive shows around 6,000  .    Are Garmin using a different ratio or is the machine just not picking it up?

As a 49 year old 190lb man I  am happy with the HRM and 697 calories burned rate it told me, but  just wondering why the discrepancy in steps for the Garmin app is so large.

all the best

Greg

  • Could it be your elliptical machine. 20 km in one hour is marathon Olympic champion speed .

lol ... Yer ...  I am an low resistance.  The elliptical is more like half cycling half running .   A  60% ratio of running is what the esitmaets ,  so maybe 11min or 10 min miles.  17,000 steps maybe but 6000 to 8000  the garmin gives.

  • I also use the elliptical at the gym. You’re are right it is not accurate. After the workout it will show about 6 km which should be about 8000 steps. My watch shows about 6000 steps. It is probably the arm movement when using it. I also just use the cardio setting. I will try the elliptical setting during my next one. I will let you know the findings
