VA3 Backlight gesture not working in activity

I have a new VA3 SW3.40. If I set backlight gesture to "always on" it works fine. If I set to "only in activity", the same gesture does not turn on the backlight at all, even during an activity. In this case, indoor cycling with external HR and Cadence sensor attached. Anybody see something similar? Possible bug?

I never found the backlight gesture to work very well, especially when cycling. I guess there isn't really that much wrist movement when I raise my arm from a handlebar, compared to from lower down. I just switched it off completely. I appreciate that isn't the answer you're looking for.

Had a similar issue where the backlight would illuminate for a split second then go off with gesture movement

I have it set to always on but it only works during activity, does anyone know how to fix this?

It appears that you have the opposite problem of not working when not in activity I think.. I had the same issue and thought it was a bug until I read this answer here (https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/healthandwellness/f/vivoactive-3-3-music/137127/va3-gesture-not-working-well?ReplyFilter=Answers&ReplySortBy=Answers&ReplySortOrder=Descending)

Basically check if "Do Not Disturb" is on and turn it off so as to make the gesture active and turn on the backlight
