Garmin Pay not working

I got a VA3 for Christmas. I set it up with Garmin Pay and that worked fine (my bank supports it). I realised that this particular VA3 had terrible battery life. I had no apps or watch faces and turned off backlight and every other setting I could think of to reduce battery life but it lasted no longer than 3 days (and I purchased it over apple watch for more battery life). I returned it and it was replaced with a new watch, and the new VA3 has good battery life. I typically get a week or more with no GPS usage.... but I setup my garmin pay card and it registers and looks like it is working but you go to use it, and the watch does not communicate with the POS terminal. Over the last month I have tried deleting my wallet and reinstalling, and using the watch at many different places with POS terminals and it simply is not recognised at places that worked fine with my original VA3.

So my thoughts are that the new VA3 has a hardware fault with the NFC system, but before I go through the hassle of replacing the watch again, is there anything else I can try to rule out software issues? Is it possible that the fact I had the credit card installed on a previous watch could stop it working on my new watch? I did delete the wallet on that watch before returning it. I mean it sets up the wallet with no issue and it seems to all work fine, but it just never makes a connection.

Any help appreciated!

    Did you get this sorted in the end? What was the issue?

    I have just activated Garmin Pay on my VA3 as the bank has eventually signed up but the watch doesn't work with the contacylcon device. Everything seems good in setting up wallet so seems like an NFC issue

  • Sorry for the late response.

    I replaced the VA3 with a new one and it worked perfectly. So it had some type of NFC hardware issue.

    My wife and I both have VivoActive 3 watches and both used Garmin Pay extensively with multiple cards.  Both watches worked fine.  Sometime since September 19 (i.e. the last time we can find a valid Garmin Pay transaction), Garmin Pay has stopped working on both watches.  Both watches are running software Version 6.90.  I loaded an NFC tools application on my phone and neither of the watches can be read by this application even though it reads all of our cards without a problem.  I'm convinced that either the NFC chips on both devices have failed since September 19 (unlikely as the watches haven't sustained any damage and are of quite different ages) or there's been a software update that has stopped the NFC chips from working.  I suspect the latter and that Garmin should investigate to find out why the NFC chip isn't working for this particular software version.  Is there any way that I can find out when software versions were applied and possibly even roll them back ?  I'll continue to investigate.

    I have the same issue. Except I've never set mine up and the setup fails repeatedly.

    Same case here, but I also had suddenly to set up garmin pay again cause the settings were lost, I guess there is a serious software bug

    My VA3 NFC also stopped working in the past month. I hope Garmin figures it out soon. 

  • I've only tried using Garmin Pay 2X and it failed both times. I don't know if NFC doesn't work or it's the setup because of issues from GCM 4.23

  • Also have problem with Garmin Pay. Data about card is lost. I must to type it agian. 

  • I'm now up to 4 failures and no successes.
