Vo2 max estimation no longer works.

Since the 21st of Feb the vo2 max estimations have stopped. Is this linked to the update earlier this week or is everybody else still getting the data?

I miss my vo2 max graph it been going up of late due to less weightlifting and more running.
  • My VO2 max has never worked in Garmin connect, I can only see it on the watch.
  • I don't get it on the watch anymore either
  • @bigwazda if you go to stats, you do not see vo2max?
  • It is there but last measured on the 21st. I have done many GPS activities since then and it doesn't give me a new score. I walked for 30 mins today and nothing.

Just noticed that on the 21st I ran and before that I had always done walks. Does it want me to run again as since then I have only walked with GPS? Can't find anything in the instructions that says this is the case.

I'm too nesh to run in real life in the cold at the moment so I guess I will have to wait until the weather warms up.

I think it requires a certain intensity of the GPS run, i.e. a minimum % of heart rate. Has your heartrate been lower than before?
Or has your walk been more irratic so the quality of data is not sufficient to do a recalculation?

This may provide some insight. I thought the VA3 would give a VO2 Max for walking, but it's not listed below. The soon to be released 645 is listed. To maintain 70% or higher for a 10 min span while walking, I would think one would have to be speed walking for some time or walking a steep incline.

Garmin FAQ Calculating a VO2 Max Estimate on a Garmin Fitness Device

VO2 Max Estimator on some GPS enabled fitness devices provides the estimated maximum capacity your body has to transport and use oxygen during an exercise. Increasing VO2 helps with your athletic performance. This value should increase as your fitness level improves and can be calculated independently for running and cycling.
Refer to your Owner's Manual to determine if your device is able to calculate a VO2 Max estimate for running and or cycling.
To generate a Running VO2 Max Estimate:
    • Activity must be recorded outdoors with a GPS signal
    • Activity must be 10 minutes or longer in length
    • Heart rate data is required
    • Heart rate must be elevated to 70% of your maximum heart rate
Walking in most cases will not provide you with a VO2 Max estimate[SUP]1[/SUP].
To generate a Cycling VO2 Max Estimate:
    • Cycling activity must be 20 minutes in length or longer
    • Heart rate data is required
    • Heart Rate must be elevated to 70% of your maximum heart rate
    • Power Meter is required
It is recommended that this be performed on an indoor trainer to eliminate variables such as elevation change, drafting, and pacing.

Note: The VO2 Max Estimate number represented is an estimate. The number can vary between runs and can seem somewhat erratic or inaccurate at first. These devices require a few activities to learn your performance.
[SUP]1[/SUP]The Forerunner 645 and 935 does have the ability to provide a Vo2 Max for walking.

  • Ok, that makes sense, i have been doing a lot of treadmill running of late and the walking has been feeling easier. I got a Vo2 max score on all my walks prior to the run so that must be why.

    Many thanks.

Dwijaya The article I posted covers Garmin products in general. It should read something like, "if you're device supports power meters... ". Unfortunately, the VA3 doesn't support power meters for cycling, but there is a Connect IQ data field you can use.

  • My last vo2max is from 28/1 from walking. With latest firmware. No changes from previous firmwares. Working the same.
