Anyone else having an issue with the backlight gesture setting not working after 2.4 update? I have it set to "only during activity" but it still come on when I move my arm outside an activity.
I can confirm this. I just switched mine from OFF to Activity only and flicked my wrist and it did come on. Switched it to off and it stayed off till I touched the watch.
I wonder if it has to do with the automatic activity tracking or recognition when flipping wrist it thinks your starting an exercise?
On the original vaHR, I had to change that setting both on the device and in the Connect iOS app. Not sure if that's still the case, but worth a try...
So the vivoactive 3 does not have a light sensor? That's odd. The backlight itself should never turn on even if it is set to gesture or whatever if the surrounding light is enough to read it.
Pebble did the lightsensor with a trick. They used the backlight leds in a sort of "inverse" mode. So when the leds were not emitting light they were detecting light, so they knew when to turn on the backlight. I assumed this is a common feature of a smartwatch.
Nope: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/571520 "GPS Smartwatch with Contactless Payments and Wrist-based Heart Rate" "From playing to paying, vívoactive 3 is the smartwatch for your active life." etc... etc..

OK, I was just trying to add a little humor. Sorry if it did not come through. (Maybe I need more coffee).
I personally would never consider a VA3 to be a smartwatch, but I guess Garmin does. Garmin seems to do things their own way, sometimes that is really good, and other times, not so good.
On a side note, I would love to see them implement a light sensor the way you describe. Maybe you should suggest that to them via their ideas submission. http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/
