Always RESET the watch immediately after a firmware update

Once again, a firmware update broke my watch... sigh. Garmin, you need to invest in some good coders, this is ridiculous.

This time, after updating the firmware, my watch started resetting itself for no reason, like twice... then a few hours later I had a biking activity running and when i was done, I stopped the activity but forgot to confirm the activity (I WISH THERE WAS AN AUTOCONFIRM FEATURE, how annoying it is to confirm every time, jeez) then I saw on my phone's connect app that I got 33 intensity minutes as it was syncing then when I realized the activity wasn't coming in through the sync because it wasn't confirmed, I tried to confirm the activity but the watch froze before I could. I had to do a reset on the watch physically with the top button and then after that my heart rate for the last hour was completely gone and my intensity minutes disappeared like they were never there. There is a gap in my heart rate and I lost the minutes AGAIN (just like another firmware update which caused me to lose hundreds of intensity minutes).

I just did a reset on the watch and had to redo a bunch of settings, and resync the watch, it was a pain, but I just don't trust Garmin watches after firmware updates.

Please, poor Garmin users, RESET THE WATCH AFTER ALL FIRMWARE UPDATES. Don't try to use the watch, you will get mad, I got really mad to see my minutes stolen from me then I had to redo all my settings.

Garmin, why not incorporate the reset into the firmware update algorithm? Just backup all the data and the settings then update the firmware and then reset the watch then copy the settings back. it is so simple. What are you guys doing over there in the software department? Your software makes me so mad to use it, every day I am just facepalming with the poor design and coding.

Garmin = Amazing hardware, awful software

I have heard Fitbit has the opposite problem. I wish you two would merge and make some really good fitness watches.

UPDATE:

after i reset the watch I biked again and got no intensity minutes... then i started getting them the next time... now i just biked again and the activity ended in the middle of my trip by itself then when I tried to save the partial activity the watch crashed and I lost my heart rate history for the last 4 hours... great job, Garmin. I'm switching to Fitbit.

Just don't update your firmware. Don't fix what ain't broke.

  • Thats too bad you are running into this problem.  I’ve never had an issue with firmware updates.  I do though restart the watch after every firmware update and after every charge.

  • @CindiL . That didn't help when a forced firmware AND software update bricked my brand new out of the box Fenix 6 Pro Solar 8 hours after its activation.  Fortunately it was purchased from Costco and I was able to return and reorder  without any issues.  I also contacted Garmin and reported the issue. (I work in IT and know a botched update when I see it.) The first thing I did when I set up my SECOND Fenix 6 Pro Solar was shut off all auto update features on the watch and the phone app.  When I read what was being "updated" on the various patches, none of the fixes were concerning enough to even consider an update of "beta" quality.

On a VERY POSITIVE NOTE:  After 4 days, it is working as designed and is absolutely fantastic. As an endurance athlete no longer having to carry a phone or wear a chest strap during workouts is a better upgrade than $1000 cycling rims or $500 running shoes.  This is the first time I have been able to collect swim data as well.  See you all at the finish line, far from the medical tent!

** They need to include a RESTORE TO FACTORY DEFAULT capability in the system.
