Big Variation while riding

Dear all,

A friend of mine just gave me a pair of V3, I tried them this morning.

I noticed a big variation of +/- 30 watts while I'm putting the same power and going at a constent pace (on flat, and little paced climb of 2km).

For example: trying to ride at a constant "feeling" of 220 watts, my Edge can tell me 180 watts, and immediately after, 250watts

Same while climbing at a "feeling" of 300watts, it tells me 280watts and the second after 340 watts.

Any idea how I can fix that ?

Thanks everybody.

  • Have you ridden with power before? If not you maybe surprised by how much your power can vary over a short time frame even if you think you out putting a constant value.

A lot of riders do not use the 1 second (instantaneous) value on their displays because of this. Try using the 3 second average power or even the 10 second average power data fields instead.

  • Hey,
Ok I will put the 3 second avg power and see what's happening, yesterday I also thought about it to solve my problem, might be that.
    Thanks for your answer.

  • Remember as well that the force being applied to the pedals will vary depending on their rotational position - for example the combined force (both legs) will be different when the pedals are at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position, compared to 3 and 9. So even if you feel like you're outputting consistent power, instant power will always vary depending on whereabouts in the pedal stroke it is measured, which is why people generally use a 3-second average.
