Navigate (Running)

Hello, for my Sunday long runs i use the "Navigate" feature which is great. However it only displays on watch face with next turn. ie; Turn Left in 30 m. Is it posisble to display the street name? Also since I have it paired to my phone is there an audio option so that I can hear "Turn left..." through my Aftershokz headphones?

Thank you!
James
  • What is the source of the Course you are following?
  • The Forerunner 935 doesn't support turn-by-turn navigation. You'll need something like a Fenix 5X for that.
  • Plotaroute put the street names as course point description when using the automatic mode for creating a course. I'm a 5x user, but that has nothing to do with the maps in my watch.
In watch I use 'Next waypoint' in my navigation data screen.
In plotaroute course point are called directions and if the total description do not fit in the watch data screen, you can use abbreviations to shorten text.

Actually it does, but only with a breadcrumb trail not a full map.
  • The question was about turn-by-turn navigation. Breadcrumb navigation is specifically not turn-by-turn navigation. Those are two different things.
  • nradov it's funny you should say that, since I bought a 935 partly for the turn-by-turn navigation feature that apparently doesn't exist.

It's also funny that the OP specifically said that the 935 already prompts them to turn during navigation and never actually used the specific phrase "turn by turn navigation". I'm pretty sure the generally accepted definition of TbT Navigation is navigation where the app tells you when to turn. Nothing in the phrase "turn by turn navigation" implies that you need full maps. And even if it did, OP never actually said it. The OP specifically asked whether they could be prompted with the street name and whether they could have audio prompts.

You are thinking of full maps vs breadcrumb trails (which some ppl, including Garmin, still call "maps", in some contexts, such as "Map Screen"). And street names, while nice, don't make or break "turn by turn" or "navigation".

But don't take my word for it, ask google:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=935+...urn+navigation

The difference with the fenix 5x is that it has onboard full maps and also supports TbT "on the fly" with a course that doesn't already have routing directions. 935 supports TbT only if routing directions are added beforehand (which happens automatically when you send a course from Garmin Connect.)

Anyway, I don't think 935 has navigation audio prompts unfortunately. I think some Garmin devices like Edge support this, but not 935.

And there is no technical reason Garmin could not have added street names to the directions when you send a course from GC, but they choose not to support that. Probably to make the full mapping devices more valuable. As others said, you can get street names (sort of) if you use a different source for your courses, like plotaroute.

And if you actually want navigation with full maps on your 935, there's an app for that (dwmap). You need to pay for turn by by nav and full maps tho. Not sure if it supports street names since I haven't used it in a while, but I don't think so.
