Navigation & waypoints

Can someone please help with a simple overview of navigation with way points? If I want to run a course, I plot it using ridewithgps.com, download the tcx, import to GC and then send to the watch. Works great.
However, if I want to add aid stations, can the watch display time/distance to the next aid station? Is that what a way point is, and how do I add them to the course? Which data field gives distance to next WP?
  • Hello, I'm interested in this, did you manage to find a working solution? (I'm using a 645 which i "assume" works in the same way with its breadcrumbs & on screen turn indications.  e.g. right turn in 140M..)

I'm often given a circular course that covers a day of cycling activity, with 2 or 3 stops (e.g. morning break, lunch, afternoon break) which i load into my watch via garmin connect... and go cycling with.  What I'd like is for it to display distance to next break, not distance to next turn or distance to end.  As a compromise, i'd be OK with seeing it on one of the additional data screens rather than the navigation screen.  I don't want to lose the upcoming turn though.

Note: strangely, I'm often given distance to end in the last 20-30k or so of the ride (a little chequered flag comes up), but I haven't figured out what the trigger is for this behaviour.

The only solution i can think of is to split the activity into 3 sections... but i usually don't have the time (or access to a PC) at the time the course is shared.

Seems like an obvious requirement of a navigation screen to me...

    Thanks in advance.

If your course has more course points than your watch can handle (max 50 for 5x), after that the watch just show distance to end and the end flag.

I've not found a way to get a distance to a different type of course points on my 5x. It's always to next.

Sometimes I've used 'saved locations' to see the distance to other waypoints, but that is only a straight line, as crow flies, not distance following your course.

Another way would be to have different courses to switch between, one with turn-by-turn and the other one with other course points. Not tested that, though, too cumbersome.

  • Ah, Thanks... that answers another question i had (but didn't ask), i'm sometimes warned when loading a course that it doesn't have enough memory to load the last 50 or 30 course points....  This worries me, but the breadcrumb trail is still there, and appears to work.  So from what you've said, all that I'm losing is the turn indications. Which makes me a lot less worried than losing my last few miles of navigation. The "error message" on the watch could be a lot more informative.
Knowing this... it would be nice to be able to strip out all of the turn information, and just have a few course points that i care about (breakfast, lunch, etc!)

  • Thanks for confirming and agree with your potential solution (And downsides).
Seems like an obvious functional enhancement for garmin (and across many watch lines)
    i.e.
an option to switch between displaying turn by turn, and distance to course point.
The ideal (for me) would be to allow both to be displayed on same screen.
    Any apps/widgets/datascreens out there?
maybe i need to program one myself.

  • It would be great with some data fields that enhances the course following experience. Do you know if it's supported by the api to create data fields that use data from a loaded course?
