Garmin Running Dynamics Pod Vs Garmin Tri HRM strap with FR935

Hi there,

Just bought a Forerunner 935 to replace my aged 920XT and decided to look into both the Running Dynamics Pod and the Tri HRM Strap. If I read this correctly the TRI HRM strap already provides running dynamics so little point in buying both.

Can anyone offer any advice please?

  • Turns out DC Rainmaker did a review and compare in the following video...9m30s in show the comparison side by side.

    I have both:

-Dynamic running pod: Only really use is if you want to run without a strap (so you are using watch's OHR sensor).

-HRM strap: The tri gets you swim HR data. Also while the OHR is decent for steady state running effort, there is no beating the HRM strap if you are monitoring rapid changes in HR like sprinting or intervals.

That being said while I have both I use the strap 90% and the dynamic footpod 10% (an easy run without any HR data to get the dynamics). I will say that the dynamic metric like ground contact time, vertical oss, etc are not that useful to me. I honestly like it for the cadence and the way it is on that specific dynamics page so it is easier to see cadence. Of course you can see cadance as a field but the color coded dynamic page for cadence is nice for feedback.
  • Interesting I hadn't noticed that cadence appeared in a legible colorful way on these extra screens probably because I can't be bothered to look at the GCT and other whatnot while running and only by accident in GC ;-)

a5972s : Unless you can't stand straps get the HRM Strap, the latest with the built-in pod are really reliable (much more than any other ones I've had in the past and I've had a few), the red "non-tri" one is fine unless you need to record your HR while swimming.
  • I bought the blue TRI Strap and the analytics are very impressive. Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.
  • Glad you like it. Can't say I'm too interested in all the analytics but having reliable HR data is priceless especially when you're ramping up your fitness. It would be nice not to have to use a strap and stick with the oHR but at some point you've got to cut your losses!
