My new FR 935 experience

I have received my new FR 935 on last tuesday. I bought it from the garmin european online shop. It took onlu 5 days from order to delivery ! I was afraid because the payment page indicated that it can take up to 9 weeks to receive the watch. Anyway, here are my remarks. My previous watch was the FR 230:

Positive

1- Technically speaking, one can feel that everything which is possible by the technology has been included
2- As always, the materials used by Garmin are of very good quality
3- The weight is very light and the watch is confortable
4- The GPS works very, very well
5- The barometer seems to be very precise and reliable
6- All kind of activities (many, many, many !) are already included
7- The battery seems to last very long when using the GPS
8- Syncing using the Wi-fi at home is a must have in comparison with the smatphone syncing

The "negative" side

1- The time indicated in a data field during an activity is always in the US format, i.e. am and pm. In the watch mode the european 24h mode works very well.
2- It is impossible to choose a data field corresponding to the number of steps made during an activity, at least for running and hiking
3- I have not succeeded to link my Garmin Tempe ant+ sensor.
4- I would like to know how the altitude automatic calibration works

I have received the watch with the firmware 3.40 and the 4.10 update was applied the same day.

  • Succumbed to the lure of new technology and got my 935 today. No real issues setting it up except when it came to connecting to ANT+ devices - external HR and GSC-10 speed/cadence sensor. It appeared to be unable to find the sensors despite my 920 having no problems. After multiple attempts, I gave up and set up some other activities. Went into the Run app and found that, despite being informed otherwise, the external HR had been connected. Same with the speed/cadence sensor connected to my bike. Software is 4.10.

    Welcome to the party!

Can't remember about the 920 but of late in most recent devices the initial proximity pairing range is quite short. My 935 doesn't having any problems picking up these sensors you mention next time.
  • While it was good that the accessories were paired, it would have been nice to have seen something to let me know. All I got were indications that no sensors could be found; hence the surprise when I found they were.

Still haven't found where I can see the HR that has been paired. I can see the details for the speed/cadence sensor but not the HR.
  • Can't recall a sensor being paired for me when did not ask. So in Sensors & Accessories you can see these bike sensors but not the HRM? Dumb question but are you actually seeing OHR for HR? I note the HR indicator appears in the top row and solid with just OHR.
  • I'm assuming it's external HR because I see a message telling me that it's connected and there's no lights underneath. Yep. In Sensors and Accessories I can see my speed and cadence sensors but not the ext HR. Looked in the Run settings but it's not there either.

Jury's still out on whether I prefer it over the 920! Certainly have to think twice about which button to press!
  • One way of telling is to put on your HR strap then try the HRV Stress test (it's one of the apps) as this needs a chest HR.

I am very puzzled though how you can have a paired sensor but not appear in Sensors & Accessories. My HR straps appear there in mode "Searching" when not wearing them and obviously one will show as Connected when I wear one.
  • Yep. External HR is working fine. HRV test worked great.
  • One thing is very clear, the GPS connection is much slower than my 920. My 920 will connect in the house within seconds. Meanwhile the 935 thinks about it for a while and then might connect. Even outdoors the 920 will get GPS ready much quicker.
  • Just had a very nice chat with Garmin Aus about not seeing the HR sensor in Sensors and Accessories. They are looking in to it as it seems they can replicate the issue. As long as the external HR works - and it appears to - it's not really a problem. However, it might not be possible to update firmware on the HR sensor if it cannot be detected from Sensors and Accessories, as seems to be the case from other posts. This by the way is the older HRM-run with the detachable sensor module, not the new ones. Pretty sure it is working as I do get all the running metrics - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1862860835. HRV test will only work with the chest strap and that works. Garmin have suggested I turn off the wrist HR, which I'll do tonight just to be 100% certain.

For now, if you have the older HRM-run modules (not the one-piece RED surrounded ones)and are experiencing the same, please contact Garmin support. If you are not having the same problem with this type of sensor, please post.
  • Is this suggesting this visibility issue is because you are using an older HRM-Run? Is that how they replicated it?
