Auto Lap during Interval workout?

I just did my first running interval workout last night using the 935. I chose 10 minute interval with 0.25 mile recovery, included warmup and cooldown via the built-in "Interval" mode in Training options.

On past watches I am almost certain that Auto Lap was inherently disabled in interval mode (thus if you had an auto lap of 1 mile, it would not lap during a 10 minute interval run at a 7:00 pace per mile). In this case... it lapped.

The laps of my file look like:
0.30 (warm up, I manually pressed lap here)
1.00 (6:34)
0.51 (3:25) + 6:34 ~ 10 minutes interval
0.25
1.00 (6:49)
0.45 (3:09) + 6:49 ~ 10 minutes interval
etc...

Am I missing something? Is this a bug (as I assume), or is there a new customization I am missing that can disable it (besides disabling it for the whole activity type / app)?

I hope I didn't miss a thread on this already, I did a search through the 935 forum.

3.30 firmware FWIW.
  • You are not alone. This has been discussed quite a bit in a thread I started on the 735xt forum:
    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?368079-Auto-lap-off-during-workout&highlight=autolap

Unfortunately there is no solution other than either:
    1) manually disable the auto-lap before you start your intervals or
    2) make a different profile (and remember to switch to it) before you start the said intervals

As you will read in the above thread, it is my understanding that Garmin used to disable the auto-lap during intervals but had to enable it due to popular demand. So clearly some people want to control that setting but Garmin isn't listening.
  • But you can effectively "control that setting" on a per profile basis.

Previously you could not get auto laps in workouts whatever you did. Now you can if you want them. So Garmin did "listen".
It was mainly for things like marathon workouts where this is very useful - e.g. 2 miles WU, 10 miles MP, 1 mile WD etc etc

OK you might get them (as here) unexpectedly. Then you need to decide what you want for next time. It's only a "problem" anyway if you do intervals longer than your auto lap distance.

Have Garmin said that they did this on purpose? I have always been hoping that it was an oversight that would be corrected.

This was on purpose, I think the 630 was the first watch getting this feature. They also introduced it in a beta firmware for the Fenix 3 and pulled it back after negative feedback.
I dislike this also very much, makes things only more complicated. If one wants to run large intervals and have laps in between, this can be easly programmed in the workout editor. Say, run 3x5km, just split this to 3x(5x1km) so one has 1km laps in between.
  • I ablosutely love the way it works with the auto lap even in intervall/training mode and would really be p..... o.. if they would discontinue this "feature".

    Ah user preferences :)
It does goes to show that all things considered the way it is now is "better" all things considered IMHO.

Breaking down a 5K run into say 5x1K no rest won't then easily tell your 5K time nor your average HR/pace in it.

Of course I am sure everybody would be 100% happy if there was a toggle in workout/interval creation to explicitly allow auto laps or not. (I have just asked if Garmin would consider this BTW).

I had not realised that it is not does work this way on the Fenix 3. Presume it must now on the Fenix 5 however?

+1 on that. Where have you placed this at Garmin? Through the Ideas Portal?
Would suggest to have it as a setting on the Activity App though.

True. Considering pace, I find the breakdown in 5 1K Intervals better for having a more constant pace on long intervals.
Still got no idea how the pace alert algorithm really works and what triggers it.

    No idea.
  • Thanks for all of the replies, sorry I had not realized some of the watches had this change in them. I vaguely recalled it occurring on the Fenix 3 in one of the betas but assumed since it appeared and disappeared that it was a bug rather than an experimental feature :)

I understand the solutions (manually changing the setting or making a new "app" for it), but honestly I do interval workouts so little I will probably end up living with it.

Tim's suggestion to add it as an option would be nice -- similar to how it lets you select whether auto laps are enabled or not when setting up a multi-sport activity type.

Thanks Tim. I hope your lobbying pays off.
  • Being able to toggle it would be ideal. I'd hate to see it removed completely; in the past I've set up training plans in the Garmin calendar, including things like 20 mile long run, or warm up/45 minutes marathon pace/cool down, and having mile autolaps during those would have been very nice to have.
