Connecting 654M to Concept2 PM5

Hi

I've really been around the block trying to get my rowing machine to display heart rate from my Forerunner.

I've downloaded ERG data so my phone connects to the PM5, but I cant get it to recognise the watch. I've set up a log book with Concept2, still no. I've tried broadcasting the heart rate, wont pick it up.

I would have thought the Garmin Connect Ap on phone should pick up the heart rate, and connect to ERG, but this apparently is far too simple! Can anyone help please? Don't know what I'm missing. A step by step (which isn't available anywhere online as far as I can see) would be much appreciated!

Many thanks

  • Sorry for not being able to give a step by step solution, you might need to ask on Concept forum instead.

But: I have the same setup and since the 645M's optical HRM is way to bad to get an accurate measurement, I'd strongly advice to buy a chest strap HRM. And since the Concept2 is not natively supported by Garmin, you need to use the indoor rowing app on the 645M and erg data app on your smartphone. Both get the heart rate from the chest strap without problem. I wish, Garmin would support the Concept2/PM5.

  • Hi Jen, thanks for the response. Yes its frustrating. I don't much like the chest straps I've used in the past, they get grimy etc, but the optical does seem super flakey. Have you come across a similar optical/watch solution that does a good enough job?

  • Sorry, no yet. But it's working very well the way I described above.

  • My setup involves broadcasting the Garmin 645 Heart Rate to my PM5 and connecting my phone's ErgData app to my PM5. After my workout I then synch the ErgData app with my Concept2 logbook. From there my Concept2 logbook is configured to synch with my Garmin Connect app so they activity with heart rate is synched in my Garmin app.

Below are the detailed steps in case you are missing a step:

    Concept 2 logbook

    • Login and go to User -> Edit Profile
    • Select Applications
    • Connect to Garmin

     Garmin watch

    • Open Settings
    • Go to Wrist Heart Rate and select Broadcast Heart Rate

    Concept 2 PM5

    • Go to Connect
    • Select Connect Heart Rate
    • It takes a few seconds for the garmin broadcast to appear under Ant +
    • Once it appears select it. PM5 will then ask you to confirm the Heart Rate shown.
    • Confirm selection

    ErgData App

    • Connect to the PM5.
    • Start your rowing activity
    • Once the workout is complete, synch your ErgData app with your Concept2 logbook to upload the activity

    Garmin app

    • With your Concept2 profile configured to connect to Garmin account it should be syncing the activity.
    • Refresh your concept 2 activity and the activity should synch showing both the activity details + heart rate.

Hope this helps although it may be what you are already doing.

  • You simply can start this app to broadcast HR (ID in PM5 is 51068):

    apps.garmin.com/.../d62a2692-4f7a-4928-a180-db844381a60e

Or in AK Concept2 Rowing you can activate broadcasting HR (via menu button on watch) in parallel to receive rower data at Garmin watch:

But I agree to JensDoe, chest strap would be better.

  • Excellent, thank you. I was being impatient it seems for the PM5 connection. All now working seamlessly

  • Thanks - and are all chest straps basically one and the same?

  • No. Garmin has a variety of HRM. See https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/c14662-p1.html. HRM-Dual is okay for rowing. Extra functionality is not needed for rowing.

  • FiscalRacer: Will this activities add up to active minutes, training load and resting times?

Okay, checked it yesterday: it shows up as activity, but does not add up to active minutes, training load or resting time.

Meaning you have to decide if you want more and better metrics from Concept2 or have your activity taken into account for your training measurement.
