Successor for the Garmin Forerunner 645/645M?

This watch has been on the market for nearly 1 year.
Are there any signs for its successor in the near future... somewherish 2019 or so?

.... and the questions:
- what will the (new) features be?
- formfactor/sizes?
- when will it be released?
  • I think it was around three-ish years between the 630 and the 645 so I don’t think there’ll be a new model any time soon. The Vivoactive 3 line seems to be where they’re throwing their bleeding edge features and are willing to release things that seem to obsolete the previous model fairly quickly. In the roughly year and a half that the VA3 has been out music was added in one model update and now cellular in the most recent.
With the 645 already having Garmin Pay and a music option I don’t see them updating it unless they see a case for adding cellular to it. But seeing as how that , I far as I’ve seen, the VA3 cellular is US only and only on one carrier so far I don’t feel there’s a 655 coming anytime soon.
  • My guess is the 935 is the next candidate to have a replacement.... But, it is kind of perfect. So what? Bluetooth BLE 5.0, Garmin Pay, Open water swim heart rate?
  • I think the 645 is a pretty perfect watch, had mine 11 months, love it.

Some people are waiting for a 230/235 successor!

A few of my friends have got the vivoactive 3 , they love it, but hate the touch screen.

I'm a pretty happy customer too. I think functionality-wise the 645m is pretty hard to improve on and certainly better than anything else currently out there.

My suggestions for improvements would be mostly around hardware (although not necessarily achievable):
    • Thinner and lighter
    • Longer battery life (as an alternative to the above)
    • Smaller bezel (i.e. a greater proportion of the watch face as a display)
    • Higher resolution screen (like the Edge 130)
    • Better contrast ratio, especially when viewed at an angle

Surely the priority for Garmin is to fix the dodgy altimeter and false lap pace readings at the start of runs?

Agreed. Bug fixes to existing functionality come before enhancements. That said, personally I don't think I'd find my floor count any more useful if it was accurate and they could get rid of the barometer as far as I care. It belongs on an activity tracker rather than a running watch.

    That's hilarious!

  • I'd had only two things on my list to improve my 654music:
make it work with the pool and open water heart rate strap
and give it a better strap - this one looks to "cheapy"
  • I really wish they would make Garmin pay actually work in the UK! Otherwise apart from battery life i love this watch (my first one)
  • Much like getting Spotify onboard there’s only so much Garmin can do. They can’t unilaterally make Garmin Pay work with every bank, the banks have to decide to work with them on their own.
