Workout splits vs. auto-lap

From my Fenix3 I'm used to the following behavior: A workout (let's say, warm-up, 5x (2' hard, 1' rec), cooldown) would have the actual workout splits saved in the activities (i.e. 11 "laps").

With the 645, I planned a workout in Garmin Connect, added it to my calendar, synced that on the watch. I then went for a run, got prompted for the right workout, so that's cool. During the run though, the watch would continue to auto-lap every 1 kilometer and the saved activity would only contain these kilometer splits, not the actual workout splits (warmup, reps, cooldown).

How do I get the actual workout splits saved? Does it matter if I add the workout to the calendar or if I chose it manually from my workouts on the watch?
  • How long were your intervals vs your Auto Lap setting? I found this thread that talks about a similar issue:

    https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into...rkout-laps-bug

Not sure if it has been addressed or not, but it appears if the interval is longer than the auto lap, the auto lap is being triggered instead of the interval lap.
  • Thank you for the pointer to the other thread. I guess I was "lucky" that the Fenix3 didn't receive any software updates at some point so I never got to "experience" that feature before. Adding a second run-profile ("Run-Ints") works for me.

This is the first time I hear of auto lap being triggered instead of interval laps. In my watch (though not a 645), I see auto lap being triggered in addition to interval laps. In the thread you link to, the behaviour seems similar to my watch.

    Example:
My auto lap is set to 0.5 km.
If I create a workout with 3 steps of 0.3, 1.2 and 0.3 km, I will get these 5 splits:
    0.3 km (Step 1)
0.5 km (Part of Step 2)
0.5 km (Part of Step 2)
0.2 km (Part of Step 2)
    0.3 km (Step 3)
  • It depends on user preferences. For me this is horrible bug (during workout I expect to compare results from steps, not from Auto Lap / part of step), but other will tell that it is a great feature. I would like to see option in settings for Auto Lap on/off/off during workouts. If you don't create separate profile (didn't looked how to do it) you can use following steps during run:
    1. Hold "Up" button.
    2. Navigate to Run options -> Auto Lap.
    3. Disable/Enable Auto Lap.
  • I did not consider it as a bug in the past, so I created a separate profile "Run No Lap" and I use this. I did not even realize somebody would mind this behavior.
  • For me this is horrible bug

This "bug" was requested by users. Which makes it hard to call it a bug.

But it is clearly an undesired behaviour to many of us, including me. Having to manage two Run profiles just for this purpose is a PITA. Alternatively, having to remember if Auto Lap is currently set to on or off in my single Run profile is a PITA.

One thing I have never understood:
There are some users who want more fine-grained split information. That is okay. But why don't these users simply create their workouts with more fine-grained steps?

If you have a step, where you need to run 2 km at a pace of 6:00 minutes/km, and you want splits for every 500 meter, make 4 steps instead. Problem solved, and no inconvenience to the other users who didn't want auto-lap during workouts.

  • AllanOlesen67 I can see your point but it's really not much extra effort to have two Run profiles. If I am using a structured interval workout then I select Run no Autolap as the Profile and if a longer unstructured run I select Run with Autolap on.
  • It is not a big effort if your profiles are static. But I make changes to my profiles all the time. And then I suddenly have two run profiles with more differences than just the auto lap. I find that really annoying.
