Adding images to a forum post

Continued discussion from here.

WillNorthYork, jkissane_ - I now see there are three methods to add inline photos to a post, not two like I thought:
1. The camera icon on the left hand side
2. The attach icon on the right hand side
3. And the scenery icon on the text toolbar after clicking the "A" icon on the right hand side

All of these result for me in a "Invalid File" or a "Error uploading image" error message.
  • Well, technically the camera icon doesn't add photos inline, it adds them as non-inline photos where you can click on them and get a full-screen lightbox view, but I'll try the attach icon.

Seems to work, so I'm not sure why it's failing for you.

    To summarize:
    Photo (Camera icon):
    - Attaches photos anyone can see, including logged-out users
    - Not inline, opens in full-screen lightbox, so it works well with multiple or large photos, and probably gives the best user experience in most cases
    - No control over resizing

    Attachment icon:
    - Attaches photos as "plain" attachment (when you click it on, it replaces the current tab/page, which is annoying)
    - Not displayed in a fancy lightbox
    - Has options to resize photo
    - Good for large photos
    - Not visible for logged-out users

    Inline (Scenery icon):
    - Inserts photos in-line
    - Not good for large pics, since there's no "click to enlarge" or lightbox feature
    - Has options to resize photo and change position
    - Not visible for logged-out users
    - In my experience, fails the most often

For large pics I would use "Camera", or if I want anyone to be able to see them.

For pics that need to go inline for some reason, I would use "Scenery".

  • I just manged to upload one.

    I used My Profile-> Media->Add Photos
Not sure if this works in the future:
It wasn't working with Chrome but with Edge on Windows 10.

I can't post this now with Edge :) Works with Chrome
Error while saving content: SyntaxError: JSON.parse Error: Invalid character at position:2
  • skopek I don't think you have to use My Profile ..., you can just click the camera icon in the upper-left hand corner of the post editor. I think it does exactly the same thing and is a lot faster.
  • Test of "Inline" option (Scenery icon).

Here's some additional text, to show that the image is actually placed inside the post, unlike the other two methods.
  • I made the above 3 posts in Chrome (Windows), but Safari on iOS also worked for me.
  • Chrome:
Photo icon -> upload -> "Invalid File"
Image Icon -> upload -> "Image to large" (320kB png file)
Attachment icon -> Upload Attachments" -> "Error uploading image" or "Invalid File Galileo.png"
I really don't have a clue what the issue is.
  • skopek I'll try a 500 kb JPG (1600 x 455) from garmin.com.

    Source: https://static.garmincdn.com/gdc/hom...ix_10_1_18.jpg

    It didn't work.

I resized it to 50% (by dimensions), resulting in a 77 KB JPG, and it still didn't work.

This is just another one of those things that makes the forum extremely annoying to use. 3 different ways of attaching a photo, and none of them work 100% of the time.

I wish Garmin would use modern forum software, with:
    - Proper social features (meaningful and prominent upvotes/downvotes on posts)

    - Proper threading and/or replies. There isn't even a Reply button. There's just "Quote", which quotes the whole message, and then a moderator will tell you not to quote the message above you. The alternatives are:
-- To use "@-mentions", which very few people do, especially because they're broken in a bunch of ways
-- To not quote-reply and not use @-mentions, which means the person doesn't know you're replying to them unless they're the TC

So most of the time you would have to subscribe to a thread or keep refreshing manually, just to see if someone replied to you.

In an ideal world, you could just press Reply and the forum would do the right thing.

    - Features that actually work and aren't duplicated in 10 different ways
  • Sadly for me all of them don't work 100% of the time...
