Why is crossfit so hard?

If I do a Crossfit style karate workout (push ups, moving around, etc), I am out of breath with a heart rate as low as 110. At 150, my technique breaks down no matter how hard I concentrate. I've never been able to push myself hard enough to get 170, although I do take the watch off if I actually fight (heart rate is probably higher then).

Yet on my easy long runs, I average around 165 and max at 177, and this is really easy. I could probably carry on a cell phone conversation, play a trumpet or read a book if I wanted to. Above 180 for any time, I struggle, and max around 200 going up a long, steep hill as fast as I can.

Is this a measurement issue? Is the 645M, as a running watch, better able to measure a sustained heart rate with cadence and GPS distance and speed vs a quick rise and fall from movement in different directions? Or is my heart rate really that low at karate, and I am just not as aware of it on my runs?
  • Different sports have different amounts and aerobic and anaerobic effort and will have HR levels that differ.

    My normal HR during a half marathon is 160 on the bike at that HR I’m sucking wind.
  • BradVincent are you using the wrist based HRM - if so it is very common to get highly inaccurate readings - try with a chest strap and see if you get the same readings
  • HIT or HIIT, esp with a lot of muscle flexing on the wrists and a lot of shaking, are really hard for optical wrist based HRMs to catch. Better get an chest strap, like mentioned, or a optical HRM for the arm like the Polar OH1 or Scooshe Rhythm-series which could be better for your Karate.

    Even with such a HRM, don´t expect a continuous heart rate above 175 or even higher like you can get while running or cycling. Like R_Tellis wrote: "Different sports have different amounts and aerobic and anaerobic effort and will have HR levels that differ." HIT or HIIT has heart rate spikes.

  • Thanks everyone. I am more concerned with know why vs actually measuring it. Not sure it is worth buying a chest strap, the watch gets in the way enough.

    Sitronen - thanks for posting, but I don't have access to the HIT WITHOUT workout. The WITH works just fine.
  • BradVincent in that case I think you have your answer - the wrist based HRM is likely to be very inaccurate for the Crossfit
