Waiting for the 645.....

Just a post to while away the time as we wait for the 645, and an interesting observation from my wife last night as I bemoaned the lack of a 645 ;-) For reference I have pre-ordered a 645M in black from Clever Training and hope to receive it within the next 2 weeks - although who knows!

Firstly I was one of the first owners of the VAHR so am familiar with Garmin's lack of specificity on release dates. I also am fully expecting the following to occur (written with some level of humor):
  • Excitement at announcement of new device (complete)
  • Spend hours trying to read up DCRainmaker and any other reviews information I can find (complete)
  • Patiently wait for more confirmation of a release date (complete)
  • Despair at release date slipping (not complete 2/7/2018)
  • More hours spent trying to find further details - but not really finding any (complete)
  • Constantly refresh DCR's site to see if he drops any hints about when his full review will come out and any other tidbits that fallout here and there. )thanks to Nighthawk700)
  • Receive shipping notification - run around house very very happy
  • Receive watch - euphoria
  • Use watch - happy
  • Find bugs and issues - disappointment begins to set in
  • Await Garmin to fix issues with firmware and remove features - frustration
  • etc
This is so different from my experiences with ordering new iPhones and Apple Watches where Apple clearly articulate launch dates and almost always keep to them, where in the time from the announcement to the launch there is almost unlimited material/content to read about the devices. Admittedly Apple isn't perfect, but they have set a high bar that Garmin seems to not wish to, or struggles to meet.

For the 645, other than the DCRainmaker preview there is very little other information other than 1-2 minute YouTube videos and articles from CES that really don't add a whole lot more. Surely other people received prerelease versions?

Anyway, I fully expect that within the next 2 weeks I will have my 645M.. Just waiting, waiting, waiting.

Alex
  • So probably not in time for my marathon on the 11th. :( ... sad trombone

Same sob story for me....I have 26.2 this Saturday. My trusty-rusty FR630 and the HRM-R bra strap for me.
  • Yes my new FR 645 music just shipped from CT UK to me in Denmark..... can´t wait :-)

Yea, looks like my 735 will have to see race service one more time as well. Although even if the 645 did show up in time I'd have still worn my HRM-Run with it since that would seem like an interesting baseline for the Running Power app. But going without a strap is no longer an option with the 735. The optical HRM on it died last week after a couple of weeks reading 159bpm no matter what I was doing.

I just hung up with REI. They are now saying March 13 as an expected arrival for the 645M. I cancelled my preorder there and went with CT. Hoping they can get me one by next week.
  • Just ordered it @ https://www.lauflust.de/zubehoer/pulsuhren-gps/garmin/garmin-forerunner-645-music-gps-schwarz-silber-010-01863-30/a-4305/
I had the shop owner on the phone while I ordered it.
He told me that a small BT speaker is part of the package. Is this standard?
Furthermore it was 50€ less than the normal price.
I hope I can hold this thing in my hands on Saturday.

Was perusing Amazon and it said the black 645 Music is In Stock (when I checked earlier it had a 3-5 week estimate)... After digging, it said it was Prime-eligible and fulfilled by Heart Rate Monitors USA. So I went over to their website and purchased it, says it should arrive this Monday 3/5. Now I wait!
  • Thanks for heads up, bobrewer. I just cancelled my Amazon order placed January 11 (for which Amazon has no idea when they can fulfill) and placed an order on Amazon fulfilled by Heart Rate Monitors to be delivered Monday 3/5.
  • OK well don't leave us hanging! First impressions?

So far so good Darren, haven't used it for any activities as yet but very happy with it so far.

I rather like the size compared to the FR235, it feels lighter on the wrist and more compact.

Battery performance has been good, was charged at 89% when first switched on (around 2pm) and after some initial heavy set up and use that day, went to bed and it was down to 73%. After sleeping with it on, it was down to 68%.

    Couple of minor points of difference to the FR235;
Vibration alert doesn't feel as noticeable
    Back light is brighter
Seems more sensitive in detecting steps, was counting some steps in the car and on the train.
Connect IOS app has more functionality to set up the device.

In addition, Garmin pay is not yet available, setup reports it as "coming soon".
HRV stress test requires chest strap. (amazingly I was able to link my chest strap from my F405).

Still to setup music and use bluetooth, hope to test that over the weekend.
  • If you get a chance, could you look at Settings>About and post the FW version as a baseline? Did you get an update when you set it up?

Mine says Software Version 2.40 (226df85). I believe it updated right when I got it, but it was kind of jumbled with the set-up so I'm not 100% sure.
