HR Zones not correctly logged

If you've synced the HR zones information showing in Fig.1 to your Garmin wearable device, and the next activity you record on it continues to show the wrong HR zone thresholds in the Time in Zones chart, then there is a defect somewhere.

Yesterday I made sure the HR zones were correct on the watch (FR235). However, after the run the 'time in zones' graph does not make sense at all, see the screenshots below. Also, I checked whether the HR zones were correct in GC, and they were. Does anyone have any idea why the 'time in zones' graph is still showing incorrect values?

The rest HR is set to 50 bpm, while max is set to 200 bpm. However, in the screenshots, you can see that HR zone 1 is from 160 to 165, which does not make sense. Zones are set to be '% of Reserve'.

Software version is 7.70.0.0.

  • The only thing that seems strange to me from your screenshot, LoekV, is in the bottom graph.

Do you see the text right next to the Zone 1 numbers (the 125/50%)? The blue text that says "Add Running Zones".

I think if you click on that blue text it will link you to the heart-rate settings SPECIFICALLY for your runs. I think your settings are "custom settings" and NOT the run settings.

Note that if you do cycling you will have to click on the "Add Cycling Zones" and add it for that.

I think they do it that way to give people the flexibility to have different zones for different stuff.
  • Hi, thanks for the reply. The max/min HR set are the default ones. If no specific running or cycling HRs are set, then the running and cycling profile will use the default ones (you can choose that in the watch settings). I have always done it in this way, and it used to work without any issues. Only recently I have this issue now.

Why not just try it and see if it works? I'm letting you know what has worked for me, but you can do as you wish.
  • sync the watch settings via Garmin Connect Web
do a quick in house test if your zones synced correct

Thanks for the tip. I already synced, and the settings show correctly on my watch itself. It's only the result after a run that shows the wrong HR zones.

I tried the custom HR zones, and now it gets picked up correctly. So for now this is a working workaround. Still, shouldn't be necessary to do this... :).
  • My FR235 changed from default zones to running zones itself. So I set the same values for the running zones so it doesn't matter if the watch changes the zone profiles.
  • Hi LoekV,

I have exactly the same problem, just started to use the HR zones in training on my 735XT. The default zones configured on garmin connect do not get synced to the device and are therefor not used. Setting a specific zone config for running does get properly synced and seem to be a good workaround.

I found this difference by looking at the manual and noticed there is a different menu option to set the zones
    https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/forerunner735/EN-US/GUID-2212F884-BA9A-499F-95CC-5847045CD3D8.html

On the watch it is found at:
Menu > My Stats > User Profile > Heart Rate (The default here differs)
    On GC:
Device settings > User Settings (Default same as in the GC app)
    In the GC App
More --> Device --> Garmin Devices --> Forerunner 735XT --> User Settings --> Heart Rate Zones (nicely hidden... (Default same as in GC))

My newly created heart rate zones for running can be found on the watch under:
Menu > My Stats > User Profile > Heart Rate > Sports Heart Rate --> Running

So it seems that the default settings do not get properly synced.
  • I've just run into this problem compounded by my 735xt reading a max heart rate of 198 during my last race, it messes up the training zones a bit.Using info from posts above i started from the website and went into the watch setings and set the zones for secondary, running and cycling activities. I synced the watch using the cable and noticed that the zone values for running and cycling had the wrong BPM and thought they hadn't synced properly, but I think the problem is caused by the autodetect MHR function on the watch. I think that setting up zones for different sports opens up a new menu "sports heart rate" on the watch , but to be honest the menus get so confusing I can't be sure. However this is what I did next
menu->my stats->user profile->heart rate, this is the secondary column form the website setting page I left this as auto detect 198
menu->my stats->user profile->heart rate->sports heart rate->running->max heart rate, on this I turned off autodetect and set MHR to 178
menu->my stats->user profile->heart rate->sports heart rate->cycling->max heart rate, on this I turned off sutodetect and set MHR to 178

I did a little test by selecting run and waggling the watch about, when it synced the activity back to my iphone it had the new BPMs for my training zones
