Android notifications do not clear after 7.1 update

I have a Forerunner 235 connected to a Samsung Galaxy S4 and since the 7.1 update notifications will remain on my watch even after I clear them from my phone.

For example, I get a text message in on my phone, I read it on my phone and the notification is cleared from Android completely. However my watch still shows the notification in the Notification section. Previous to the update to 7.1, I had the option to click the down arrow to Clear (or Dismiss) the notification on my watch, however that option is no longer there.

The only way to get them to clear completely is to reboot the phone completely, rebooting the watch doesn't have any impact on the behavior. If I sever the bluetooth connection between the watch and the phone, the notifications will clear as expected, but once the bluetooth connection is restored, the notifications will come back in a minute or two.

I have cleared notification cache on my phone, and reset the messaging app as well, and neither has corrected the problem. I also have a ConnectIQ watch face installed on my watch, however I have disabled that and it has not changed the behavior.

Has this happened to anyone else? I can't find anything in here or online about it.

Thanks!

    Exatly same issue for me!!!!!

Remember, though, that correlation does not imply causation.

Same for me with my 230. Is 3 of 1 million users statistically significant? ASmugDill will tell us! Or, at least he will suggest that we have no right as consumers to demand that notifications clear...

Right. Indeed we have no such right, if Garmin only advertises that the wearable device will receive and display smartphone notifications, without any stated promise that the user can meaningfully respond to the notifications through the Garmin device (e.g. to answer or reject an incoming phone call, or dismiss a new message notification).

My FR235 is still running firmware version 5.40, and I'm running Garmin Connect Mobile app version 3.11.1 on my Android phone. I can dismiss incoming message notifications using the watch as the user interface, but I cannot dismiss the notification (which provides a short summary of the current temperature and weather) from the Samsung Weather Channel app. C'est la vie!

… I had the option to click the down arrow to Clear (or Dismiss) the notification on my watch, however that option is no longer there.
If the ▼Dismiss option was still indicated by the watch's firmware, but it simply does not work upon being selected, then the issue would be rightly considered a software defect Garmin has introduced and ought to fix. On the other hand, if it is merely a case of regression in the user options provided, one can hardly insist that it is a defect or somehow makes the watch not fit for the purpose for which it was advertised.

The only way to get them to clear completely is to reboot the phone completely,
Can you clear it in your Android handset's Notification Centre?
  • Regarding read/dismiss options - I've had this issue on a Vivosmart device with Android GCM where some messages had read & dismiss and some just read.

Apparently the options are sent from the phone to the watch with the notification. If the watch doesn't display the "dismiss" option then it didn't receive from the phone for that particular notification.

    Thanks

  • Same issue here.

I can get rid of them by using the Garmin Connect app.
Settings > Smart Notifications > Disable TextMessages > Go Back > Garmin Devices > Sync now with the FR235.

    But it's a hassle ofcourse.
  • I am on latest version and no issues.
    That's with an Xperia Z5.
Perhaps it's an android bug - are you all using Samsungs?

    Wiko Pulp 4G. Android 5.1.1.
  • Sounds like it might be related to older versions of Android only then. I dont think it will be very widespread.
In which case you'd probably ask Garmin support officially to find out what they changed and whether it can be reinstated.

Thanks, I opened a case with them and we'll see what comes of it. The added info should help a ton!
