problems with my heart rate

Former Member

Since a week, i can't trust the heart rate function about my forerunner 235 .

I have the most recent version about my forerunner
I reset totally my forerunner and i restart my forerunner, but i have the same problem.
But if i ran on a slow temp , he show 142 but if i control i have a heart rate from 120 .

If i run slow, the heart rate becomes higher . Is there any wrong since the last update?

Sometime i think he's working correct but the most time not.

    Same here.

Most on running , sometimes on cycling.
My forerunner was 1 month old , 6.30 fw.

    Did a 15km trail last week. I'm 38.
My average HR was 182, max at 200.
I was able to speek quite easily most of the time.

It happens very often that the watch over estimate the HR by 20.

    same Problem here

I have the same Problem with my Forerunner 235 since ~middle of November.

    Anyone with a solution/workaround?

    regards,
  • Use a chest monitor

That is the best solution because any movement in position on the wrist will cause the wrist monitor to get a bit flakey. BTW, you should try using a riding mower wearing the 235, the bumping around will result in a 175 bpm heart rate without breaking even a tiny bit of a sweat. For walking setting the wrist band fairly tight will produce somewhat acceptable results but any activity with a higher degree of arm movement and I use a chest monitor.
  • I've been using various optical HRM devices for about 2 years now including the 235 since it was released.

My anecdotal experience is that oHRM tech does poorly in cool/cold conditions if my hands get cool not even cold. Throughout the spring, summer, early fall I have very few poor results with my watch but earlier this week was the first day that was borderline glove weather for me since March.

I started out with gloves on and had a solid HR track for 5 miles but my hands got too warm and I took them off. For the next several miles my HR was below was hovering right around 94 which was half of my cadence. Eventually I got tired of carrying the gloves and put them back on and HR returned to normal but went back into the 90's when I took them off again.
  • Hmmm, during my run yesterday, it was pretty chilly and my HR didn't look right like it usually does, so I'd have to agree about the cold affecting the HR ... wonder if wearing a sports wrist band over the watch would help cuz like you, my hands warm up pretty quick and gloves would be way too warm.

  • It might depending on the person. In my experience though it's been more about my hands than the watch or my arms.

The first time I noticed the phenomena I was wearing short sleeves and no gloves but the sun went down as I was running and HR went to crap so I made the connection and made sure to wear longs sleeves the next day in similar conditions and got the same result. A few days after that the conditions were similar and I wore short sleeves and gloves and my HR track was fine.

I've been working on that principle ever since and gotten good results, although I will wear a chest strap if I'm doing a workout and really want make sure that I get good HR data.

My guess is that cold results in constricted capillaries and less blood flow near the skin surface for the sensor to pick up. And while the blood coming into the arms is fresh from the core is still warm but the hands work as a kind of radiator. Just spitballing though.
  • Gotcha! That makes logical sense. This is my first cold season running with my watch, so I'll keep that in mind and see if it correlates with your findings. Must find some suitable gloves ... the only ones I have are for skiing, so waaaay to much!
