Best mode for pace alerts?

Hi all — after setting up a “pace alert” is it better to set the data recording to “Smart” or “Every Second”? I’m guessing the Every Second mode makes the pace alert more accurate, but maybe not.

Thanks for any help!
  • Data recording rate won't have any affect on pace alerts, but I would personally recommend using a 1 second recording rate as Smart recording throw away data samples.

Use pace alerts only for intervals (laps) of 1 km or longer.

Expect to get two to three spurious alerts at the beginning of each lap and learn to ignore them until you have enough distance in each lap for your pace to average out.

Set a pace range of no smaller than 15 sec/km or 20 sec/mile (e.g., if your target pace is 7:30/mile, then set alerts at 7:20 to 7:40).

You can use a foot pod with the 230, but you'll have to turn off GPS.
  • I use pace alerts for short (90 second) intervals without problem. I also use them outdoors with GPS & GLONASS.

I also have a foot pod for cadence indoors and out and speed indoors.
  • So I used the pace alert in a 5k yesterday and it was pretty accurate. I guess it's more effective for intervals, but it kept me in range for most of the race (I had it on vibrate, so I lost track of the alerts towards the finish). Overall, it functioned well. Thanks again for the input!
