Does Garimin play with FC max?

I'm afraid the answer could be yes.

Aside the problem of HR monitoring (...) I realised that my "default" HR FC max, calculated for me by Garmin, is 173.
When I run quickly effectively my FR235 indicates 173 bpm max.

But if I modify my characteristic FC max and I push it to 183 (tested pushing my HR with a BT cardiofreq.), my FR235 gives me higher values of FC max if I run quickly.

So the question is, does HR really monitor my cardio freq, or does it interpolate datas with GPS pace?
Garmin, can you answer this?

Thanks
  • The 235 does not try to extrapolate your HR from GPS pace. However since it's an optical heart rate monitor it's not directly measuring your HR but instead reading changes in density under the skin to figure out when blood is pulsing through and determines HR from that.

I'm unfamiliar with the term FCMax. Is that different from HRMax or is it simply the French term for the same thing?

Thanks for answering. I'm not sure Garmin doesn't use other parameters than density changes.
FC max = frequency cardio maximum
that is used on connect.garmin.com when you look at a run (at the bottom of the page); maybe in the US is indicated as CF max ...I guess.
Btw, French... why French? Je ne suis pas Français!!

Because FCMax = Fréquence Cardiaque Max. FC is the French equivalent of HR in English.

Dis donc ...ça marche aussi en Italien!
FC max = Frequenza Cardiaca massima

Being a typical American monoglot not being familiar with the term I Googled it and the first link that was heart rate related was in French so I inferred it. ;)

For me on Connect I only get Avg HR, Max HR, and Training Effect under the HR section of my runs.

As far as I know Garmin isn't doing anything that other oHRM makers are so the Elevate sensor is just shining light into your skin and sensing changes in blood flow like everybody else. Now what they're doing on the back end to filter out noise to reduce cadence lock I don't know but the reading should still be based on what they consider to be good readings from the optical sensor.
