Trail running and water

For those that do trails, how are the new forerunners with trail running? They don't have a trail selection I see but maybe could be with updates? I have no experience with them, I used to own a Fenix 2. Also how are they with rain? I'm assuming they are fine but? Any input is appreaciated. Albie
  • You won't have as much as data fields as the fenix 2 because it's not an ABC watch. That said, all fields related to altitude (there's only the gps elevation) and barometer won't be present.
But you can use the tempe sensor which I'm using with no trouble.
I love the fact that it's not touch screen, so no trouble in the rain.
  • I've never seen any mention of adding "Trail Running" as a standard activity to 23x devices. What makes it different than "outdoor running", except the name in Garmin connect?

I know of a "Trail Walking" (aka "hike") Connect IQ application, but it doesn't display info that runners might want to see.

Well I'm not too concerned with borometer or even altimeter by itself. In fact the altimeter wasn't real reliable on my fenix 2. I'm considering the fenix 3 but don't really want to spend that much if I don't have to. Also I'm not even sure if the 3 has a trail running activity, and maybe it doesn't matter as Jim stated. As long as it somewhat accurately records my elevation climb and descent. I live in the hills and my last trail 30k had a climb of around 3200ft so knowing this is pretty important to me. Thank you for your replies.
  • I'm pretty sure the F3 has a trail running activity.
I had an epix which had the trail running but I never used it.
I kept my total ascent/descent as my data fields in a normal running activity.
If you're not crazy about the baro/alti features, then the 230 with the gps elevation should do for you.

Last sunday I was running on a trail.

I downloaded from ConnectIQ a datafield showing the total ascent during the activity.

That data is not avaible on FR230 elevation datafileds by default

I noticed that also on activities history details there is not the total ascent data.

One thing to note about this, is the 230 uses GPS for elevation, total ascent and total descent, which can be quite a bit off. When you upload to Garmin Connect for the fr 230, it applies "elevation correction" to give you much more reasonable numbers.

One of the screens in my hiking app displays elevation/ascent/descent, and I'll walk 1/4 of mile on flat ground, and it could show an ascent or descent of a 100+ feet on the watch, but GC will correct my elevation gain to a few feet at most.

I know GPS elevation data could not be so precise but as I wrote on the activiy profiles thread I would like to have the data avaible from the watch even if not corrected.

On flat run I know that data is unuseful but on trail running on the hills it can give you an idea.
