Cycling HRM accuracy

I have been wanting to buy one of these, but I would mainly use it for cycling.

Unlike a cycling computer, I like the fact I could also use it on the occasional run, check my HR through the day, use the activity tracking features aswell as all of the advanced VO2, Zonal, features. Seemed perfect.

However, I was dissapointed when DC Rainmaker's http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/11/garmin-fr230-fr235-review.html review more or less put a downer on buying it for cycling use, although I was pleased I hadn't bought one yet.

Has anyone bought/used one of these for cycling? If so, any chance of some feedback on how it tracks HRM on your rides? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks
  • A sample of one here, but I did wear it for one very short 4.5 mile ride and the HRM performed fine.

However there was somebody else who had posted a couple of rides a week or so ago who didn't get very good results.

I think it's okay for somebody like me who only bikes a little for commuting or cross training, but for a serious cyclist or tri-athlete your better off with something else.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

I can't see the link though.

    Cheers
  • I hadn't put a link in my previous post.

The commenter I was talking about posted in this thread.
    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?334138-Heart-rate-too-high

His first comment about HR while riding is at the end of the first page with a couple of more on the second page.

Thanks for this! Anyone else had a go with it on a bike?
  • 235 for cycling. My experience.

I bought it in December. I mainly practice cycling, either MTB, road or spinning. Several times per week. I run also often.
My experience says the HRM readings of the 235 are not good at any bike. I thought it's because handing and pressing the handlebar you're making the blood flow along your arms to vary, and thus the 235 gets confused, resulting in wrong reads.

Aside of the above, the 235 has often problems to catch pulse correctly during interval training, either in a bike, either running. It's also very user related. Some people`s reads are OK, and some wrong.

Another two tips on using the 235 for cycling:
    - wearing a bike computer in the wrist is not the most convenient, since you must leave one hand out of the handlebar to read it, or both if you wanna press any button... :-/
    - wearing it during winter make it to be deep hiden below your winter wear, almost impossible to reach unless you stop your bike.

Last: anyhow, I use it and I'm happy. Some rides I use it as it comes, and some rides I use it together with the HRM strap, having precise HRM readings. Battery life is very good compared to my previous Garmin GPS watch. And user interface is simple and intuitive. Some menu's overall schemas could help a lot in the User Manual.
  • I have used it for moderate Spin bike workouts as well as mellow biking with family - both times the HR has been much better then running. Occasional drop out, going to 80-90HR for 20sec or so (especially in the first 5-7minutes)

On key running workouts I use a strap. When cycling - I wouldn't even think about putting it on. Granted I haven't done much hard bike workouts or intervals, so YMMV
  • I bought it mainly for sending pulse to a Edge 1000.
I do NOT recommend the 235. The 235 misses out when the HR changes up or down. Sometimes it is a few seconds behind, sometimes half a minute or more. Really annoying when going up or downhill.
I have compared the 235 to a Garmin strap and a MIO sensor and the 235 is always the one showing another HR.
I have now replaced the 235 with a MIO Link. -Works great!
  • used it t for cycling and HIT spin in the gym. Useless. You have to position your arm and dont squeeze the handles, it'll dip to 80s when youre actually at 150. Compared to Fitbit and mio fuse, 235 was a joke. I am glad i returned it. So i say dont waste your time.
  • I use it for mtb cycling and I'm happy with it. Never noticed any weird things with HRM when cycling.
