Can I record a ride wearing multiple heart rate monitors

I have nothing but problems wearing and recording rides using my Garmin Edge 820.  I get so many drops and low readings and high spikes that the data is useless.  I have three different Garmin straps and three different Garmin transmitters and have the same issues.  I use to wear a Polar HRM and it worked flawlessly, but it didn't connect to my Garmin (too old).

Garmin recommended I try putting the transmitter on my back, and/or putting it on my side.  I have seen various comparisons of datasets recorded by some reviewers who wear two or three different HRMs and see how accurate they are.

Has anyone here done this, and if so, does my Garmin upload to connect.garmin.com show all three datasets?

  • You can only record one HRM at a time with an Edge.  And if HRMs are recorded with other devices, I don't think you can associate them with the activity in GC.  Other apps might do that, but I don't which might.

I've had no serious systemic problems recording HRMs with the 820 or a number of previous Edge models.  I use the old traditional Garmin strap (~ 10 years old now), or a Scosche optical arm band.  A dry strap in cool/dry weather will either not pick up or give really high heart rates until I start sweating.  Licking (or otherwise wetting) the strap contact areas helps a lot.  Security and positioning of the arm band is likewise important.  Straps with snap on modules can sometimes benefit from cleaning the snaps to ensure good conductivity.  For sensors, I stick with ANT+ over bluetooth.

I have three different Garmin straps and three different Garmin transmitters and have the same issues.

why would you test them all three at the same time, knowing they are faulty to start with ?

    • is there another common issue ?
    • how old are the straps ?
    • how are the batteries doing ?
    • is there enough moisture during activity ?
    • is your edge on the latest firmware version ?
    • related to your physical build ?

care to share & fit file with said issues ?

  • I either soak the straps before wearing so they are wet, or I have also tried medical grade electrode gel

Straps are all new, replaced in the last year and barely worn.

I personally replaced all batteries in each unit

Garmin Edge is up to date on firmware

Not sure about my build. I am 5 foot 11 and generally weigh 175 to 180 range

Everything on the Edge works except the HRMs. Strap is "tight" against my chest.

The purpose of wanting to wear and test three straps/transmitters simultaneously is to see which position works on my body without having to do three different rides which introduces three different weather scenarios.

How do I share a fit file here?

    thank you for the feedback

nothing out of place there Slight smile

How do I share a fit file here?
    • zip the fit file and drag & drop it onto your new post
    • fit file from the edge or export original from Garmin Connect Web

purpose of wanting to wear and test three straps
    • there are CIQ  datafields that record one additional hr set to the fit file

Here is a file from earlier this week.  While I am in decent shape my working HR is nowhere this low.

hr sensor operating time was 22h after the ride (fresh)

ant+ reception quality at the end of the ride was good

hr data was lost in 8% of the data recordings

otherwise no strange phenomena to be seen in the fit file

there are CIQ  datafields that record one additional hr set to the fit file
    • mostly for comparing OHR to strap data
    • I do not know CIQ datafields recording from more than one auxiliary hr sensor

can I suggest to remove all sensors from the edge

or at least deactivate the ones you do not need

could be wrong but guess there is something with a sensor with id "4930"

setting up all the sensors from scratch would be a good idea to start with Slight smile

  • 4930 is my HR  transmitter, at least I'm pretty sure it is.  I will remove all connections and try just one of the hr transmitters at a time and see if it make any difference. If I can any of them to record accurately a full session, then I will add in my P1 pedals, then my indoor trainer

If that doesn't help I may just try ordering a Polar OH1+ and see if it works.

    I really appreciate your assistance.
