Gear combinaison wrong

Since the 8.40 update the gear combinaison given by the D Fly is wrong
Have you noticed this issue ?
  • Since the Shimano software update to the D-Fly the Edge now take the gear values from the D-Fly. Currently there is a misalignment of the values set-up using the e-tube phone app and the Edge. I reported this to Garmin on the Edge 1000. The issue impacts the 1000, 820 and 520.
  • Thanks for your quick answer !
  • Thanks aweatherall but could you please expand? Lately every so often, 6-7 times in a 4hr ride the di2 gears as stored on the 820 keep resetting to 52-39 and something else in the back. Is this a problem caused by the Edge 820 8.40v update or of the Shimano di2 update?
  • Both. The latest Edge and Shimano software updates changed the way gear information is set-up and maintained on the Edge.

The old model was that the Di2 system just sent front and rear position index values. On the Edge you manually selected what gear set-up you had at the front and rear. The Edge would then use that gear sizing and the supplied position index values to look up and report the gear size you were using.

The new model is that everything is setup on the Di2 side and then pushed to the Edge. So in addition to the front and rear gear position index values the Di2 is also sending a selection index vaue for which front and rear combination you have picked. The Edge uses those selection index values to pick what front and rear sizing you have. Currently there is a mismatch in the selection index values between the Edge and Shimano system. They are off by 1.

I have spoken with Garmin and they have a fix that will be included in the next release (Don't know when that will be).

In the short-term there are 2 possible ways to address this.
It is not possible for a consumer to roll back the software version of Di2 components so that leaves the following 2 approaches.
One is to roll the Edge software version back one release so that it is uses the old model.
The second approach is to fool the Edge by changing the gear size selection configured via the Di2 phone app. Pick a gear size selection 1 off from the selection that you have currently picked. I think moving 1 earlier in the selection is the correct direction. Some trial and error will confirm this.
  • It has been corrected with 8.50 software update.
