Speed inaccuracy

I'am using Edge 820 now for approx. 3 month with unfortunenatly lots of troubles so far. Most troubles I could solve with the technical support, another not yet:
On all my bikes I have installed the GSC-10 cadence/speed sensor from Garmin. They are working with the Edge 820, but I miss the option at the Edge 820 device to enter the correct wheel size, which is nesessary that the speed is calculated properly.
I have observed a speed deviation of the edge 820 from around 5-7% upwards. Currently, the Edge 820 always shows a speed that is too high.
e.g. When I'am riding 40km/h (measured with a calibrated bicycle Computer), 42-43.5km/h is displayed, at 30km/h it's approx. 31,2-32,0km/h.

Before I was using Edge 820, the Garmin Edge 500 was my bike computer. This model had the option to enter the exact wheelsize and the speed was displayed properly. I had just a deviation of less than 1km/h, mostly only ±0,5km/h. This is acceptable, but more than 5% is really high.

Does anyone know, if it's possible to enter the correct used wheelsize on the Edge 820? If so, in which menu item is it located?
  • You can enter the wheel size on the 820. It is under the senor details. It may need to be in communication with the sensor to show the option, but you should be able to find it under the sensor details.

Fortunately, yes. But it's a bit hidden because you cannot find it unless your 820 is connected to the speed sensor for the bike you're trying to calibrate. Once you're connected, swipe down from the top of the screen to get to the display/sensitivity settings and tap on the "connecting to sensors" choice. Then tap on your speed sensor that's connected. Then tap on "sensor details". Now you'll get a "wheel size" choice and can set it to automatic or manual. Simple, right? Hah.
  • thanks a lot for this information. Problem is resolved.
