Garmin 820 spontanuous shut down during ride

During the first two rides with the 820 it spontanuous shut down 3 times.
Contacted support and they adviced a reset.
The third ride no problems.
But last weekend again it shut down during the fourth ride.

Difference between the 3th ride and the others: only one datascreen and no downloads from IQ store.
For the other rides I used several datascreens and also 2 downloaded apps were in use.

Beneath you find the err_log of the last time it shut down.
As a result of the reset I don't have the other ones anymore.

Anyone any idea what's the problem here?

  • Only Garmin will be able to interpret the error log, however, if it makes you feel any better, I have had similar issues. It does not appear that any one thing triggers the problem. I have had the unit simply lock up then shut down for no apparent reason, I have had it lose all device channels, then regain all (power meter, cadence, speed) except heart rate while maintaining nav data. I have had the issues with IQ fields and without. I now cross my fingers and hope that it will behave for the duration of the ride, however, I am not surprised if it doesn't. I am hopeful that as times goes on and new firmware is developed, eventually the kinks will get worked out. I will admit, I just got an Edge 1000 that I plan to switch to since it has been around a lot longer. Not wanted you probably wanted to hear, but misery likes company (or so they say)!
  • Thx for the reaction.
Send the errorlog to the dutch support a week ago. In a reaction they suggest to return the device so they can send a new one. Think I'm gonna do that, but if the software is crap it ain't gonna solve a thing!!
On the other hand... than everybody must have this problem. Can't imagine it's that bad.

For today's ride I deleted all downloaded apps. Unfortunately again the garmin let me down after some 2 hours. Looks like IQ is indeed not the cause as you already suggested.
"Funny" that it always happens after some 2 hours.
The errorlog for today is exactly the same a last week.
  • I get the same shutdown. Happens, about 1 out of 4 times when I am following a route

I restart the unit, press play and it just picks up. Usually the loss/missing piece is pretty small
  • Currently, it is notmal that the garmin edge 820 shuts down abnormally
I hope they can bring a firmware in a few years which will fix the bugs
No need to return the unit, because the next unit also will crash with firmware 5.20
  • Received a new device.
Used it last week 3 times during indoortraining (1,5 - 2,5 hours). No problems.
Today used it during a ride on the bike. It failed on me twice.
Exactly the same errors as on the other device!!!
So indeed.... returning wasn't much helpfull.

Differences between indoortraining and outdoor ride?
Indoor: no gps, no speed sensor, no cadance sensor, no bluetooth connection with smartphone.
Outdoors I do not use the garmin maps. Instead I use a map of www.openfietsmap.nl. Use these maps already for years on the 800.

Maybe there is something wrong in the use of gps, sensors or map.

Already send an email (again!!!) to dutch support with these observations.
  • So you can order the next unit, and get an error again.
Nice way, to waste time and money.
  • Spontaneous Shutdown

One thought to try, which seemed to alleviate (at least for now) my spontaneous shutdowns this past weekend with 5.20. Go to the Select Maps setting within your profile and make sure everything is disabled except for the basemap and whichever routing map you are using (e.g., Garmin or OSM). My theory is that the processor is so bad on these units that it overloads and shuts down if it has to resolve a conflict or prioritize among maps while you are navigating.
  • Also one spontaneous shutdown

Also experienced a spontaneous shutdown today. First in about ten rides on the unit.

Disappointed as I found the Edge 520 unreliable (shutdowns, dropping sensors, and bad GPS track) and exchanged it for the 820. Now it starts all over again?!
  • In my case the cause of the problem seems to be the map I use!!

I'm a big fan of the Benelux full version of http://www.openfietsmap.nl/
Worked fine on my 800 for years.
But when I use this map on the 820 the spontanuous shutdowns occur.
With other maps it works fine.

Only problem is the level of detail. Benelux full version is extremely detailled.
I found something of an equivalent on http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ => Routable Bicycle (Openfietsmap Lite)
Detail is a little less but still much much much better than the maps Garmin installs standard.

Weird thing though is that www.openfietsmap.nl and garmin.openstreetmap.nl both use the same source!!!
