820 Stuck on Start Up Screen

My 820 Edge gets stuck on the start up screen. It sits idle for a while and then goes black. I force shut down and it does not solve the issue. I'd like to attempt to remove any temporary files from the device as noted in another thread which may be causing an error, but I can't get the device to pop up on my mac as a device or mass storage unit. Any ideas before I return this thing?
  • I had the same issue, had to do a master reset. The Garmin didn't show up on my computer to remove temp files.

Which series of buttons do I press for the reset? I've tried the power and start/stop button, which turns it off, but it still is stuck in the start up mode afterwards.
  • Try

Prompted non-Vol Clear - Clears NV and deletes all default FIT files and any files in the NewFiles folder. This will not delete Activities, Courses, or Workouts.

    • Turn device off
    • Power device on
    • While booting up, press and hold upper-left corner of the touch window ONCE the copyright information appears
    • Continue pressing the left hand corner of the screen until you receive the prompt

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Stuck with a useless device right now.
  • Are you able to get the Edge to mount to a computer?

I'm wondering if it is going to sleep rather than getting stuck? When the screen goes blank does a short press of the power button bring it back?

No, it won't mount on my computer. I can get the device to turn on to the Splash/copyright screen; it says there for a few minutes and then shuts off.
  • The following should let you mount it, though you will need to be quite quick to do it. Hold down the power button until it forces a restart. As soon as you see that it is doing a restart hold down the lap button and connect the USB cable. Keeping holding the lap button down until it mounts (20 to 30 seconds).

Alan: Thanks for all your suggestions thus far. I tried the suggestion above several times on two different computers and I can't get it to mount. Will keep trying.

Alan: I do see one small change when doing the above reset: before the splash screen loads it brings up the battery life percentage (which it didn't before) and then goes to the splash screen. Not mounting still though.
