Garmin Cycle Map

So what is this? Do we get maps of the whole US? I can't find any real detail on it anyway ...
  • Thanks. This is good. I did however notice that if you set a map to a profile it doesnt save, which seems to be an long standing issue not fixed from Garmin. Very odd

    Hi,

this is odd, I am trying to add an OSM img file on my 820, but I won't show up on the list. I have 5 maps that are enabled when I turned the garmin on for the first time. I copied a *.Img file into the Garmin folder, but it never appears as a map. Any ideas what I have done wrong?

Correction: my fault. Default is 4 maps, so it was showing me my map. But I used the Garmin Cycle Map on the screen, when I disabled this map it did show my the map information from my added map. I also turned the information detail to "most".

Another edit: I used http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ to create my map for my Garmin. I always used the "Generic Routable" option. Now I created a map with the "Gerneric Routable (new style)" option. The result looks much better on the Garmin 820.

The maps on the device are great if you are a road cyclist. I do a lot of MTB and had a great OSM IMG file on my 520 (without nav obviously). Is it possible to load this on the 820 and select it on occasion? Couldnt see in settings.

Good question - I thought the map image I had on the 520 was also easier to read. (trails in some area's are hard to see.) I read on the following link that you can download a map image and activate both the new image map and the garmin open cycle for navigation at the same time. (at least that is how I understood it.) I may try that out.

I loaded an OSM map for my area into my Edge 820 and it shows up in all of my activity profiles and was automatically enabled in all of them. Check in Home → Settings → Activity Profiles → <profile> → Navigation → Map → Map Visibility. For me the list of maps there includes the new OSM map I added. You can disable (or enable) maps on a per-profile basis, but I didn't spot anything to globally disable one.

I istalled a topo map in addition to the default maps in the 820 but in my experience the map choices in "Map Information" affect the whole device not just the profile you chose. This is pretty confusing. Let's say I went to Home -> Settings -> Activity Profiles -> "XC" -> Navigation -> Map -> Map Information and disabled all maps but the topo map I installed. This works fine and when selecting XC profile for a workout I get the right map. But now if I go to Home -> Settings -> Activity Profiles -> "Road" -> Navigation -> Map -> Map Information it also has the topo map enabled as the only map. Change it here to have only "Garmin Cycle Map" enabled, go back to the XC profile and yep, the "Garmin Cycle Map" is the only one enabled also there.

So even though you go to the map enable-disable menu through a profile selection it seems to be a "global" variable and affects all profiles. Could someone else verify this? Of course I would like to use the topo maps for MTB profiles (XC and Fatbike) and a road map for road biking.
