Edge 500 and PowerTap SL+

Sorry for posting this Edge 500 question, but I didn't see the 500 option on this forum.

My Edge 500 (FW3.30) returns the hub sensor ID when calibration is performed. On the calibration page, it shows "calibration" and "torque", but the calibration field always displays the number that is same as the hub ID. It's supposed to give a number like 512. The torque field shows 0 which is correct.

Someone advised that I should try calibration outdoor so I did, but got the same result.

Anyone care to share insights?

  • This is due to the way the SL+ software is written. There is no way around using an ANT+ head unit to see the calibration value. The calibration value is sent using a private ANT message so it works on a PoweTap head unit, but not on an ANT+ compliant head unit.

Thanks for the swift reply. So, how do all the ANT+ PowerTap/Garmin users (that are many out there) calibrate the power meter before each ride?

Just to be clear, SL+ is an ANT+ compatible power meter.

  • It is ANT+ compliment, but the return of the calibration offset is not a mandatory part of the spec.

You would perform a calibration as you are now. You just cannot view what the offset is. This was fixed when PowerTap released the G3.

G3/Garmin is an ok combo, but not the second generation PowerTap (SL+). Understood. Thanks.
