Average speed question.

Am I correct in saying that the only way to get average moving speed on the Edge 520 is to have Auto Pause enabled, and that it is not possible to display both average moving speed and average speed over the whole ride including stops?
(Unless there is some combination of settings/data fields that has eluded me).

You would have thought this would be so easy to implement, but judging by the response to this thread, not many people would be interested anyway.
  • Most of my cycling is longer rides with the Audax Club and have elapsed time limits so I have to manage both moving speed and time off the bike, stopped for any reason. I set a target elapsed time and therefore elapsed average speed and use a mapping site that allows a planned average speed to be set for the route, some will even allow for impact of hills. I export the route for loading onto the 520 and have a standard "Time Ahead" (behind) data field and turn Auto Pause off so that the "clock" is always running. As long as the field background is not red (ie it is positive) then I am ahead and approaching a checkpoint / control / foodstop I know how many minutes I can stay until my time ahead bank runs out. So I can languish over a second coffee as long as I think I can force the pace a bit (not likely). If I am falling behind then I can try to increase the pace or plan to spend less time stopped or both. But having said that it would also be nice to show both moving & elapsed speed. It would also be useful to be able to set a virtual partner speed when following a course and not just via a percent. I have seen IQ fields etc that also keep a "banked" time accumulation but avoid using the IQ apps as they are extra battery drainers

Have you already tried editing the data for a course ? If not, it is easily done, provided that the course comes from an activity saved as a course. Go to that specific course, hit the «3dots » edit button, click on the «allure» text (on the same line as altitude, ) select the type of course (road, vtt, gravel...) as «road» and you'll be able to edit the average speed. That new average speed will give you a new time target. You can edit in a reverse way: choose a new time target and it will give you a new average speed. When you synch the Garmin 520 with this new data, the virtual partner will have that new speed to beat.

    Hope this helps !
