Increase speaker volume, get multiple beeps, or change frequency?

I do a lot of structured interval sessions with my 520. On my old 510, I could always hear the beep, even if I was hammering away into a gusty wind so I didn't have to keep checking the screen every few seconds to see how much longer the interval would last. But on the 520, I can barely hear the beep. Suggestions?
  • There's nothing that can really be done to the hardware or software of the 520 to increase the volume of the beeper. One thing you can look at is the mount. If the Edge to mount interface is pretty much sealed up, the sound volume will be less. If you look at the Garmin out front mount, it has a hole all the way through it in the middle where the beeper outlet is. The Barfly mount does not, so I ended up drilling a hole through it and getting a bit more volume out of it that way.
  • My mount also holds a GoPro under the Edge, so drilling a hole isn't an option. Can it be programmed to beep multiple times?
  • I use a Cycliq mount which has a GoPro underneath. All I did was drill out the puck that the computer mounts in and that was enough. I actually swapped it over from the Barfly mount I had previously.

I don't use structured workouts on the 520, but I thought I'd set up a simple time based workout to try it out. 5 seconds before the change of each phase there were countdown beeps. Is that what you want?

If I had a set of beeps, that'd certainly increase the odds I'd hear it, and I could keep my eyes on the road instead of glancing at the screen. How did you get a series of beeps?

I also wonder if the Garmin could somehow interact with Garmin Connect on my iPhone and have IT give a beep or a vibration when it was time for an interval to start or finish.
  • I set up a simple time-based workout on Garmin Connect and sent it to the 520. I then let it run to see what it did.

How are you setting up your workouts? Are you using the on-device interval workout?

Do you use the aero- or the handlebar mount? During my first ride with the Edge 520 I was surprised how low the volume of the beeper was. Then I switched to the handlebar mount and now it's loud enogh.
  • FWIW, I use the K-Edge mount. Never had a problem hearing the beeps on my 510.

I set them up in Garmin Connect and sync to the 520. Pretty straightforward.
  • I just bought the Varia Radar 315 and when used with my 520 plus and UT800 light in the combo mount i can't hear the beeps, when i move it to a stem mount i can hear clear as day. Frustrating that I have to use a work around like this given the investment in a garmin connected bike.
