SRAM eTap not pairing with 520

I tried to pair my eTap group with my Edge. It is updated to 5.3 fw.
Oddly enough I was originally able to pair it. But when I went to Connect to it, it did not go through.
Tried a few things but did not work. Ended up remove the Sensor. Tried to re-add it but from that point on it does not find it.
Tried shifting rear derailleur, tried front, removed eTap batteries, replaced them and tried again.
Nothing. Any one have a solution? Thanks.
  • One very important thing to know about the current SRAM software release is that they have implemented a very aggressive timeout period for how long the system will continue to send gear information after you have stopped moving.

The rear derailleur has motion detection built in to it. If you wake the system up by changing gear then the eTap will broadcast the gear information. It will continue to do this as long as the system detects that you are moving.

If you are not moving then the eTap systems stops transmitting gear information after only 30 seconds. This is what I think is happing to you. You wake it, the Edge finds it, then the system goes to sleep. This drove me crazy for a while until I found out that it went to sleep after 30 seconds if you were not riding.

Trying spinning the cranks or putting the bike on the trainer and riding it will setting the eTap integration up. I'm sure this will fix the problem for you.

    Hi Allan,

Thanks for the info! Very good points.
However this did not solve my issue.
I believe I found the solution as it now works.
I had downloaded the ETAP gear app from Garmin Express.
I think what happened is that once the app kicks in (after I rotated the crank and shifted the gears), then that app "reserves" the Ant + communication, so the Edge could no longer connect to the shifters/derailleurs.
Anyways not sure if this makes sense, but after I removed the app from the Edge through syncing with Express, I could once again find the eTap shifting sensor and connect to it.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I did not know there was an eTap app.

    Good morning,
It seems that I have a similar issue : I broke my Edge 520 that was working fine with my Sram Etap. I bought a Edge 1000 updated with last V12.0 firmware but I can't detect my Etap on my Edge 1000. I remove the Etap Gear App without result. Is someone has an idea of th trouble ?
    Thanks,
    Arnaud
  • Is the Edge finding the eTap, but not showing any gear information or is not finding it at all?

    Thanks for helping me.
Not finding it at all. I connect others sensors to my Edge 1000 : remote, heart, power tap P1 et Garmin Varia Vision.
I call the Garmin Support in France but the man I talked to didn't seem to know what is Sram Etap... ; I reinitialized my Edge and had also download Garmin WebUpdater.

  • The only suggestions I have would be to shift the front derailleur so that the rear derailleur has that position information updated for transmission to the Edge.

Ride the bike or rotate the crank while the Edge is searching to make sure that the eTap is awake and transmitting.

Make sure you are selecting the Shifting senor and not the Shifting Di2 sensor from the senor type when pairing. Shimano uses a private ANT implementation and not the ANT Shifting standard used by eTap.

    Thanks Alan,
    Unfortunately nothing has changed.
    I will keep on searching...

  • Very strange. Is the rear derailleur working? It is the rear that talks to the Edge so if the rear battery is dead then that will prevent the Edge finding it.

The front and the rear derailleur work perfectly. So no explanation.
