Edge 25 feature enhancement thread

I've had my Edge 25 for about 2 weeks now and really like it.

Because it is a relatively new product I think this Forum needs a Features Request thread. A place the early adopters can voice their opinions on what they think is missing, what they would like changed and what they would like added.

Of course some changes are limited by hardware. Can't have barometric altimeter added in a firmware unless there is a barometer hiding in there somewhere ... ALSO in a small unit there may be some processing power and/or memory storage constraints.

but anyway here goes - in no particular order:

  • make a zoomed out version of the course map included in the scroll as an option (indicating where I am on course)
  • add HR to P1 or P2 text displays
  • If I set a course like a criterium or circuit I want it to auto lap count based on geography and not "5 miles"
  • longer text string for course names
  • place to display the amount of memory used/available
  • a way to set up what displays you want it to scroll through
  • sometimes I just want to watch cadence and HR
  • a way to check calibration of speed/distance sensor (I rode 10 miles according to GPS and I rode 9.99 miles according to speed sensor)
  • make the beeps silent on the device but audible through the bluetooth connected device
  • make email and calendar alerts flash up like phone and text alerts from bluetooth connected devices
  • battery stretch mode - power save settings - maybe turn off display except when a button is pressed etc. so all it does is collect GPS location, speed, HR, cadence data and when a turn is imminent in a course it displays that (I am assuming the display takes some power)
  • here is a hardware one - but it is an accessory: extended battery pack product
  • gear inches display - you know the speed and you know the cadence, you should be able to figure out what gears I am in
  • another hardware one - maybe an accessory or for the next version: an grade sensor (accelerometer based?) - am I riding uphill or down? does the sensor match the Map source? could this make altitude gain/loss more accurate?

anyone else?
add some - vote for ones you like/would prioritize

Accepting it's (as one poster put it) Garmin's 'low-end' device, I think we probably shouldn't expect to ask for too much... but I think there are a couple of basic, half-done features which really need addressing even at this price point, viz:

    1. A % indicator added to the battery icon - especially given its fairly (but understandably) weak performance
    2. The option to delete multiple records from the device - it's a PITA having to go through them one at a time, especially if you've forgotten to do it for a few days

Although I had a few syncing issues initially, on the whole I've been very happy with what my Edge 25 does.

(I am a little confused over non-GPS use, however. See my earlier question to one poster in this thread on the subject - I don't know how to set the wheel size when using the E25 on rollers.)

    I want:

    • HR and HR Zone display as a Data field... SERIOUSLY GARMIN? It's on the publicity photos as a feature... why not in the actual product???
    • Ability to view Time of Day at all times, not just when I'm not recording
    • Battery level display as well
    • Ability to set alerts other than distance-based auto-lap
    • No screen brightness setting? REALLY?

This thing seriously could have been so good. I thought Garmin had gotten it right with this product. Unfortunately not. I had to return mine and am swearing off of Garmin products...
  • Actually remembering all settings and sensors between sessions would be nice. It's been seriously screwed up since the last firmware update.

But... how do you set the wheel size? There's nothing in the Edge 25's manual about it - and if I set 'Indoor' mode, I don't get the option to set a wheel size. (And it is wildly out, therefore.)

I'll second the question. How is that done? Thanks!
  • Upload coursed from Nuvi or other GPS

It would be nice to be able to do some routing while you are riding. It would be possible to take a common automotive type GPS and have it make a route then have it upload to the Edge 25 so that you can navigate to a new designation.

    Ride Safe,

    Some basics

I tend to agree with Neezurt, given that this device shares hardware with a running watch and is Garmin's tiny low end cycling computer, I think we should be realistic about what might get added in firmware. That said, I do have a few requests.

    • HR on Page 1/2
    • Finer audio alert control (Only beep on turn by turn, or HR alert, etc.)
    • If possible, volume control for audio tone, it's embarrassingly loud if you're on a shared trail
    • GPS point laps
    • Ability to remove paired sensors without a reset
  • Feature Request - Heading Field

And for what it's worth, I'd love to see a heading field - N, NE, E, SE, etc, etc. On cloudy days, and when not using mapping, it's nice to have a directional sense back on twisty roads or long singletrack. Granted, I can just load a map to get the compass(aka you just get a North pointer), but why not make it a standard field option? I mean direction is part of GPS 101 after all <wink wink>.

I also encourage everyone here to make formal feature requests from Garmin's homepage. There's a Contact link at the bottom of the page. Just drill down to "Have an Idea?"
  • Battery and other things

I +1 on the battery % indicator. If not on the normal screen, but at least when you are charging. I'd like to know if it's 5 minutes away from being fully charged or 50 minutes away without having to unplug it and wait to see the battery bar. My watch does this so I would think this is an easy one.

Also +1 on being able to adjust ride settings when paused (auto pause off/on, display screens)

    Font Issues

One more item to add to the enhancement list. PLEASE adjust the font size for the hour digit on the Time data field. After you crest over 60 minutes, the hour digit is so ridiculously small it's basically unreadable. Why it has to be smaller I have no clue.

That being said, I'd vote for a thicker font in general to ease readability overall while bouncing around on the bike.

    Thanks

    - Heading field (when not following course)
    - Batt %
    - GPS strength next to batt % when doing an activity

    First 2 are very important.
What is an GPS without showing the heading??
