Data Recording Interval

I just picked up an Edge 25 and so far I'm impressed.
I am wondering what recording interval it uses. Is it the standard 1 second like most other devices?
From what I found through research it is variable, which i'm not sure what that really means. If I'm mountain biking out in the forest at slow speeds, 1 second is probably what I need... using my iPhone strava app it has given me great results, how will this Edge 25 compare to that?

Anyone know what the intervals are and have had any luck using it for slower speeds?

I should also note that i'm using firmware 2.2, I haven't upgraded to 2.3 yet... which i'm planning on doing this evening, unless other suggest otherwise?!
  • I believe it's smart recording likes lot of the non-premium watches. Basically it's a variable length interval which takes input on change of direction and then takes a data point. It produces smaller files but is still good in terms of accuracy

  • The recording interval is variable. On other devices with the option between "Once Per Second" and "Smart Recording", this is Smart Recording. It is triggered to go off based on changes in distance, speed, position, sensor values, etc. The actual time between records may be once per second with HRM connected and biking and would be significantly longer if you came to a stop on a ride with no sensors. The recording is meant to record all pertinent data while keeping the file size down.

CHUNKYWIZARD - Thanks for the info, I'll have to test it some more to see how accurate it is compared to my iPhone Strava app (which i'm not even sure the frequency that it gathers data)

gregorgarminku - Do you have any experience with the variable data with respect to mountain biking? I wasn't planning on using sensors, but that might be a quick fix to get the data points recorded more frequently.

I am not sure there is anything on this particular device to force more data drops. Changes in speed, HR, orientation, etc. meeting a threshold will trigger a record, but there is nothing that would force it to go to once-per-second. Obviously with mountain biking I would suggest riding with a speed sensor to help with dense tree cover (which would help avoid data gaps if cover were bad enough to significantly disrupt the GPS/GLONASS signal).

I was thinking about the speed sensor as it would help with the stop and go as well.
I'll test first and then add the sensor if I'm having some troubles.
  • I use my Edge 25 on mtb tracks with lot's of twists and turns. It seems I have a problem with the variable registration, since I have problems with STRAVA recognising my segments. On my Edge 800 with 1 sec interval set I do not have this issue.

PLEASE Garmin, update the software with a 1 second interval registration option PLEASE (thank you!)

rapsac - This is not what I want to hear! Are you using the speed sensor with it?
  • Rapsac, is the Edge finding the segments and the FR25 missing them on the same segments at the same time? I've were you running both in parallel to eliminate other factors (such as wonky segments, different GPS reception etc)

  • I will make some testruns with 3 of my devices, Edge 25, Edge 800 and Galaxy S4 phone and report back.
Note that I have the issue of missed segments on especially twisty singletracks (with switchbacks), on all 4 times I have used the Edge 25. Previous usage of phone and Edge 800 have not displayed this behaviour.
But as mentioned, a comparative test will make the identification of the problem more secure.
  • rapsac,

Can you attach the course file you are using that contains these segments from the Edge 25?
