Virtual Partner is listed as a feature of the Edge 25, but then when I research i can find zero information, does it have Virtual Partner or some dummed-down alternative feature & how do you set it up please?
It is a slightly dumbed down version. Create a course, set pace, send to device. Follow course on device and you will have and your time ahead or behind the course time. That seems to be about it.
What I want to do is race against my previous time, can I save a previous activity as a course & race against it? I was under the impression as Virtual Partner is mentioned that it would be s straight forward set up. In actual fact it doesn't sound like Virtual Partner at all..
You can't do a ride then save it as a course, you have to create a course on garmin connect and then send it to your device. Ride the course and then next time it'll tell you how far behind or in front of your best time you are.
On Garmin Connect you can convert a ride to a course and then download it to the Edge. Some Edge units let you do it on the device, but I don't think the 25 does.
Thanks for people coming back to me .... Here's what I did but have a few questions as a newbie :o
1) I created a course from an existing activity on Garmin Connect
2) I create a segment within the course on Garmin Connect , in my case the segment was the full length of the course. Did I even need to create segment for the Edge 25, the product information says I do?
3) I went on the ride with ride mode > follow course > selected the course
3) Got the prompt when I started the course and when I ended, although I didn't seem to get an 'end ride' or 'save' prompt.
4) During the ride i got the +/- metric to show /compare with previous ride (all good so far).
To clarify as I'm a total newbie to Garmin and GPS Cycle Computers :
what is the +/- metric comparing the previous ride/time is it distance, seconds ??
When I ride the course again will the Edge 25 automatically compare with my improved best time ?
The +/- is minutes/seconds. When you've finished a ride you have to press the button you pressed to start the ride. If you go on the garmin website you can download the manual. If you want to change the data fields you'll have to do it on a computer.
I followed a course today that I had created in Garmin Connect and I deliberately did NOT create a segment within the course and I have NOT followed the course before, yet I got the course prompt and then I got the +/- metric during the course, begs the question what is the +/- for when I've never followed the course before?. Hard to understand this other than to say its not working correctly or the manual is wrong. Also course names are truncated on the Edge 25 which is irritating and as there is a scroll feature for course names its clearly a mistake. All in all disappointed and I've tried Garmin live support a couple of times and they were pretty clueless too... I've spoke to a few people since and I'm probably going have to take a hit on this and sell it second hand.
This is from the Garmin Edge 25 manual:
You can download courses containing segments from your Garmin Connect account. Segments are virtual race courses. You can race against a segment, and compare your performance to past activities, connections in your Garmin Connect account, or other members of the Garmin Connect community. You can upload your activity data to your Garmin Connect account to view your segment position. - Start following a course containing a segment (Following a Course from the Web). - When you are near the starting point of a segment, a message appears. - Start racing against the segment. - The device displays the time spent in the segment. - A message appears when the segment is complete.
