Here's what I think I learned:
1. Cadence Sensor - don't expect your Cadence Sensor to update
- Garmin says it does not require software updates: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=PzqFFaxR7l6NZtF8lTlXj9
- Note that my Cadence Sensor self identifies in the Garmin Edge as a '20' not a '2'... Garmin should be more respectful of this
2. Speed Sensor - As per prior posts, removing sensor from bike and placing it near Edge1030 Plus (within two inches) resulted in immediate connection and update initiation. It required about 4 minutes or so, then gave me some mumbo jumbo about restarting the sensor. I got impatient with that, mounted it back on the wheel hub and gave it a spin... speed was duly indicated on the Edge1030.
Thanks to authors of prior posts, I think they hit on something there. In my case and perhaps others, the update connection fails when you do what's logical, i.e. spinning the wheel to wake up the speed sensor.
